Re: Moms (since it's dead here)
Juice: I used to dilute it, but gave up around 15mo. Her cousins drink it and she sees them and has to have it, too. I buy her the tiny juice boxes and she has one a day or some diluted OJ for the vitamin C at breakfast and sometimes with her snack after her nap.
Ice cream: If we have ice cream, we share ours with her, but she only takes a few bites. Her sweet tooth is for fruit.
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: she isn't a fan of cakes or cupcakes and takes a bite, but nothing more. Sometimes she'll take a bite of a cookie, but never finishes them.
Beer/wine sips: No way. I wouldn't want to stress her digestive track (liver) so young.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: We still rear face at 20mo and will until AT LEAST age two and probably beyond. M still meets the requirements to RF and her weight is still super close to the 20 lb limit to FF. She doesn't protest RFing so we continue. if something as simple as having her seat face a certain way prevents an internal decapitation in an accident I'm all for it.
What is your opinion on giving your child:
Juice: we've given no juice, she's totally content with water and her morning milk/smoothie so I just don't really see a need
Ice cream: she's had a few bites
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: she's also had a few bites
Beer/wine sips: no way, not until she's MUCH older
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: I'm a die hard rear facer, she's 2 mo from 2 years and I have no plans to switch her
What is your opinion on giving your child:
Juice: If we're at home, I'll dilute, but if we're out and he gets a juice box, it's NBD. He gets juice maybe 2-3x a week. It's mostly milk or water.
Ice cream: The kid LOVES ice cream. He gets it on special occasions only.
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: Same as above -- he has a serious sweet tooth and will ask for more if given cake/cupcakes/cookies. Obviously I don't oblige, but he loves sweets. He only gets them on special occasions.
Beer/wine sips: No way.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: I was a die-hard rear-facing advocate (and still am!) , but have recently made the switch to forward facing. He'll be 2 at the end of the month and we're taking a 10 hour road trip in a few weeks. It'll be much easier to keep him occupied/ entertained if he's forward facing. We made the switch when we rode in FF's winter truck and B's carseat wouldn't face rear-facing. I feel completely fine with my decision.
What is your opinion on giving your child:
Juice: She doesn't get it at home but does sometimes at both grandparents houses. It is diluted with the ration being about an inch of juice per cup and the rest water.
Ice cream: She loves it and will not leave our sides if one of us has some. Which isn't often. She doesn't get much of it but I don't mind her having some.
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: We give her the gerber Cinnamon Graham cookies 1 or 2 a day sometimes she likes them sometimes she just walks around talking to the animal shapes. haha. Cake/cupcakes only at special occasions. and never a whole one.
Beer/wine sips: She stole my brothers spoon of his spiced eggnog on Thanksgiving. That will be her only taste for a very very very long time.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: We still rear face and will for a long time. She is only 21.5 lbs and I see no reason to face her forward if she is happy the other way. If she is in my moms car until they get a 2nd seat she will forwardface because Chance is in that car more often and he forward faces. It is rare though.
I lurk on the bump (12-24 months) and apparently these are hot topics.
What is your opinion on giving your child:
Juice:Maddy gets juice maybe once or twice a week. DH gives it to her and I know he doesn't dilute. He gave her apple juice day before yesterday and couldn't understand why she was a poo machine yesterday.
Ice cream: She gets ice cream every once in a while if we have it
Cake/cupcakes/cookies:We rarely have cake or cupcakes around but if we have some she'll get a bite or 2. With cookies most of the time she might get a cookie but more often it is a bite or 2. She still thinks graham crackers are cookies and she gets those more often.
Beer/wine sips: Never, of course neither one of us drink very often to begin with but why even giv e her a taste?
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: We switched to Forward Facing around 18 months. In my moms van unless you put her all the way to the very back you have to FF to get the seat installed properly so after she turned one anytime we went somewhere with mom I just put her in forward facing, while one weekend I had hurt my ankle and when I tried to get in the backseat of my car with the carseat to reinstall I about killed myself so I went ahead and turned it around. We also had to turn her in DH's van around the same time as she would stand up in the seat instead of bending her legs to let him put her in.

2012 Reading Challenge
Juice: She's had juice maybe once or twice. She wasn't very fond of it and prefered her plain water.
Ice cream: She's never had any. However, I have given her frozen CoolWhip which I like to eat often instead of ice cream.
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: She had a taste or two of cake before her birthday, but really got to enjoy it at her party, although she wasn't really interested in it. I also, have given her a bit or two of a cookie if I'm eating one, but will usually give her a graham cracker instead.
Beer/wine sips: The only time we ever drink at home is when she's already asleep (same goes for DS) so there's no way for her to even have a taste.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing: We're still RF. I honestly have no desire to take out her carseat just to put it back in again. As long as she's happy(ish) and safe, that's what matters. She doesn't like car rides and taking her to see family is miserable, but I really don't think turning her FF would change that.
What is your opinion on giving your child:
Juice: He gets it a few times a week but mostly its milk or water
Ice cream: if we have it he helps us eat ours
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: cookies more often than anything else sweets wise...he has his daddy's sweet tooth so if daddy has a cookie he has to have one too.
Beer/wine sips: He has only had one and it was becuase poppop left his can on the floor and Josh picked it up.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing - Josh has been FF since he was 1 which at the time, was the pediatric reccomendation. He loved it from day 1 and since the seats we had for him were gifts from my parents and were FF only we weren't going to buy new seats to keep him RF after his 1st bday.
Juice: Down the road when we get to that stage, we won't give it often and when we do, it will be diluted. We will introduce it though.
Ice cream: Again, not there yet, but only on special occasions or we'll share ours.
Cake/cupcakes/cookies: See above
Beer/wine sips:I think this is where I differ from the majority
When I was little, I always got my dad a beer from the fridge and he
"needed me to taste test" it for him. I thought it was always a fun
thing between me and him and it was never a big deal. I was probably 6
or 7 when we started that and I have no problem doing the same with
Connor.
At holidays (when we were a bit older) we were always allowed a glass of wine or our own brandy slush, etc. Alcohol was never treated as "taboo" but we knew we had to have mom or dad's okay first.
It's that line of thought that I was never one to say "oh we need to go out and drink" when I was with friends in HS. I guess I would compare it to how alcohol is treated in Europe. I was used to it, so it wasn't a big deal to me.
And what do you practice:
Forward facing or Rear facing rear right now
We will for as
long as feasible. If we switch early or at the last possible minute it
will be because it is the best decision for us to do so.
