Good Idea or Bad Idea?

My company is huge into charity work, and this year our office has adopted a local woman's shelter as the primary focus of fundraising efforts.  This past week they asked people to donate gently used accessories so they can sell them at a tag sale this afternoon.  Money goes to the shelter.

I buy gently used purses on eBay all the time, but for some reason I'm not cool buying some sunglasses that a co-worker used to wear.  Is that weird?  Much like my Internet postings, I like my consignment finds to be anonymous.

This is my siggy.

    I can understand it.

It is funny because I have no problem wearing my sister's hand-me-ups around her or others who know she gave them to me, but I would feel weird wearing a coworkers old stuff! I'd have to give them to someone else.

I would just donate some money instead of buying anything, or buy something and give it to a third party.

  • Perhaps I am shallow, but I do not want people looking at my bag, thinking, "Hey, that was Sally's, right?"

  • My employer kinda sorta does something like that.

Once or twice a year, they post a sign asking everyone to clean out their closets and bring in any clothes, shoes, accessories, etc that are no longer needed. Everything gets dumped on tables in the lunchroom and employees are free to take whatever they want. Anything that is left at the end of the day is donated to Salvation Army, Goodwill, etc.

I usually bring in a few things, but I can't bring myself to dive through the piles. I've seen the bathroom and coffee station habits of my co-workers... I don't want their stuff.

  • Yeah that would be kind of weird to me to buy something that my coworker previously had.  I also prefer secondhand stuff to be from someone I know (like a family member) or anonymous.

With respect to the shelter, it makes more sense to do something like having everyone bring in some type of food to donate for a holiday meal,  toys for the kids, collect old cell phone for emergencies, warm winter accessories for standing outside waiting for public transport (something that a lot of women in shelters have to do), or donating bus passes.

Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing that the money raised will go directly to the residents of the shelter and not toward the overall budget of maintenance, salary to employees, etc.  Any money toward the shelter is good, but isn't it better to know you're making a difference in the lives of the residents?  Just my two cents...
