Dog adoptions?

We are looking to adopt a dog, but don't know where to start.  What shelters or rescues should we look into?  Are there any to avoid?  We don't want a particular breed, just one the will be no bigger than 25-30 pounds.  I'm just a bit overwhelmed.  Thanks!

Re: Dog adoptions?

  • We always try to go to the SPCA.  We know that those animals are on a time line.  We have adopted from Special Pals too.  I always feel so guilty only picking one.  The thought of an animal being put down just because of abundance makes me sad...

Adding..  Do your own research.  We adopted a kitten from the SPCA.  Her card said, small and short hair...  She is enormous and long haired.  It was pretty obvious just looking at her that she was going to be a long haired cat...  Just a word of warning.

  • Would you be interested in a half Chihuahua half Dachshund? My friend just had a baby and for some reason her husband thought it would be a great time to bring a puppy into the family too. I do not agree with them giving the dog away but if he goes to a loving home that understands a dog is family to maybe it is for the best.

  • Chester and Bailey were both from the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.  They have a big tent set up on Saturdays at 45 at the Rayford/Sawdust exit on the west side of 45.  We had a good experience.

  • We hunted for weeks, and spent several weekends driving to all the adoption events at various Petsmart and Petco locations and to ALL the local shelters.  I spent HOURS browsing petfinder.com which is actually where I first saw Bailey, then we went to the shelter where she was (back actually we'd been there once but missed her) especially to see her. I had very specific wants/don't wants in mind and crazy as it sounds, I knew I'd "just know" the right dog when I found it.

And just so you're warned, the shelters were really really hard for me.  I was on fertility meds and SUPER hormonal at the time, and all those sad little furry faces just broke my heart.  I cried a lot, so take some tissues with you.  ;)

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • We knew that we wanted a smaller (<25 lbs) older (just not a puppy) dog. This type seems to go fast at the SPCA and Humane Society. We looked for several weekends and never saw much. There are always lots of large dogs - that made me sad! :( We didn't have any luck with rescues either - they were non-responsive, or weren't happy that we both worked full-time. We ended up finding the PERFECT dog for us at the shelter in Texas City. I think people always think to go to the SPCA and Humane Society, but forget about the smaller shelters as well. There were lots of cute dogs there, but the two times we went - we didn't see any other people looking to adopt animals.  Long post to say - don't forget to look at the smaller shelters too. :)
  • First, Thank you so much for opting to adopt!! The animals in the shelters are on time limits but most rescues pull from shelters so either way you are saving a life...actually you're saving 2. The one that you adopt and the one that is saved because of the "free space" that opened up. My parents just adopted a dog from Tiny Paws rescue and I am actually getting my mom to foster for them as well. They have the most adorable small dogs! I volunteer and foster for the Montgomery County shelter but I usually suggest rescues just because you'll know exactly what your getting, they have usually been worked with (potty & crate training) and you can guarentee they are not sick. Rescues charge a little bit more but you still come out cheaper than purchasing a dog and doing all the vetting yourself. Montgomery county does off-site adoptions at Petsmart, Spring Creek Feed, Tractor Supply, etc and a lot of those dogs have been in foster homes where they have been "worked" with as well. Along with Tiny Paws, I have fostered for Scout's Honor & SAFE House which have smaller dogs. You might want to check out petfinder.com and see if you find something there first then you'll know what rescue to go with.

I'll be out with MCAS at the Petsmart on 2978 & 1488 on Sunday if anyone is out that way!!

I can't either! I always manage to grab another foster..or 2 when I'm there. When you start running out of crates you know you're past your limit.

  • We like CAPS ( http://www.cap4pets.org/ ) off of I 10 and I think Barker Cypress. We've also spoken with a number of rescues that we met at Petsmart and Animal Tales ( http://www.animaltaleskaty.com/Animal_Tales/Welcome.html )sponsors a rescue normally the last Friday of the month ( called Yappy Hour), but I think they stoped for Nov & Dec and will start again in January. The owner there does a lot with rescues and maybe able to assist in which ones would be good to check into. There is more info about it on their FB page.

  • We got Phoebe from Bay Area Pet Adoptions and were very happy with them. We went to "just look" and ended up filling out an application after playing with Phebs. 2 hours later they called and we took her home.

We also looked at local city animals shelters.

  • as another poster said, we spent months looking for just the right dogs, and went to many shelters and adoption events.

    a couple suggestions:

    Red Collar Rescue:  http://redcollar.org/

    Scouts Honor:  http://www.scoutshonor.org/?id=1

If you're in the Pearland area, the Brazoria County Humane Society does adoptions at the Pearland PetCo on the weekends.  We got our first dog from them - they do wonderful work!

    Thank you for adopting!!!!
