I have a dumb question about mailing a package to a service member

Is there a box requirement? Can we use any old box or does it need to be a special box from the post office or something? What about those one-size/one-price boxes? Can they be used?

I know I can use google, but really I miss y'all and felt like posting even if it's dumb. :)

  • Your best bet is to get the flat rate boxes from the post office.  If you order them online they'll ship them to you for free.  But you can use any old box, just as long as previous shipping stickers and such are removed.

  • Okay, cool. I have some of those flat rate boxes at home already; I just wasn't sure I could use them.

  • :)
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Just don't be a dummy like me and try to send anything through the mail in a used beer box, even if it's the perfect fit. I tried to send a bunch of stuff to my parents earlier this year in a beer box. Luckily, they just put the box inside another bag. I have no idea why I tried it in the first place.

  • Lol. I don't think I have access to a beer box, but if I did I could totally see myself doing it. Good to know it's not allowed.

  • I use a regular old box. I live on the East Coast and it's cheaper to use a regular box vs the flat rate shipping boxes (it would be cheaper to use the flat rate boxes if I lived, say, on the west coast (just to do zoning charges).

Well, that's weird, doesn't it go to SF?

If you're on the East coast and sending anywhere in Europe or the Middle East, I'm pretty sure it goes through New York (JFK Airport).

Flat rate boxes are a great deal if you're sending small, heavy things.  For bigger, lighter things (pillows, blankets, clothing) you're better off using a regular box and paying for Priority Mail.

No, I meant for those of us on the West Coast. I didn't understand why we would be paying any more to ship it to SF than she would to ship it to NYC.
