3-year old Pre School

Apparently registration has already started for some preschools for next fall.  My head is spinning!   I didn't think I would have to think about this yet :)

Does anyone have any recommendations?   Also, does anyone know anything about Westside Early Education?

Any thoughts, opinions, advice would be great!

TIA

Re: 3-year old Pre School

  • I know this is a drive for most moms since I'm one of the few that actually lives in Des Moines but St.Joseph's Catholic School preschool program is amazing. I LOVE Ella's teacher and her aid and they teach both the 3 and 4 year old programs. 3 year olds go only one day a week on Wed. and the 4 year olds go Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri. The registration is after the new year, in Feb. I think but the three year old program doesn't usually fill up. I don't think enough people are aware of the program. For the 4 year old program (we didn't do the 3yr) the religious component is done the first 15 min of the day. Parents who don't want that component start 15 minutes later. I'm not sure if the 3 yr program is the same with that because the 4 yr preschool program is part of the universal preschool program. Like I said, I know its a drive but I love it so much I thought I'd throw it out there.

  • I know the Urbandale school district offers 3 yr old preschool but I didn't check too far into it because I was trying to avoid 2 morning drop-offs. We have Ava in a daycare center where they do preschool from 9-11:30 every day.. in the 3 yr old room she was learning to recognize and sound out all of her letters and numbers, learning about the weather, learning about a new random topic each week (ie families, cowboys, transportation, animals, etc).. Now in her 4 yr old class she is practicing writing all her letters, writing her first and last name, etc. She has learned a lot and we really like it but not sure if you are looking to move him out of the in-home setting..

  • Wait, I'm not ready for that!

Is this something that BP would be transporting JZ to for you? If we lived in Beaverdale, I'd send Nicholas to Holy Trinity.

We're looking into sending him to Sacred Heart since we are hoping to be able to send him to elementary school there, but it's only two mornings. If anyone knows of any 3yo programs that are every morning (without breaking the bank), I'd be open to suggestions as well.

  • yes, BP would be transporting him for me (she rocks)!   Holy Trinity is in my top 2 choices.  I'm also looking into Zion Lutheran (Westside Early Education).

Timber Ridge (a few blocks from me) has a 4 day preschool option. Not exactly a convenient drive for you though.

Something to think about... we went with the Johnston school district program so that we can gain priority when it comes to getting selected for 4 year old preschool and kindergarten programs. If we didn't have seniority over the other kids, we'd be placed wherever there was room. Not necessarily what was closer or the number of days we want.

When I signed K up for school this year we had no seniority and while I wanted 2 days a week at the school down the street, we had to take a 3 day/wk program at a school farther away.

I don't think you can really go wrong with any preschool program. Kids are sponges so they're going to learn the basics before kindergarten regardless.  It's more about social aspects and you can get that anywhere. PreK is more about play and less about academics. Most likely yoru kid will already know all of the stuff they're teaching at a 3 year old preK anyway.

  • Our prior in-home lady who is 30ish was sending her kids to St Pius for preschool.. another option thats not too terribly far from BP's house..

  • Our very particular neighbor sends their youngest to St. Pius X also.

  • St. Pius X starts at 4 year olds - no 3 year old option.
  • Based on recs from people i talked to, the 3 that were tops of our list were shepard of the valley (isn't this kind of close to BP?), waukee's program that meets in the school right by us, and hope's program. Thanks to adam standing outside at 4 am in -10 degree temps, we got into hope and went that route. :)

I agree w/ Angie that most any program is going to give him the academics that he needs.  we LOVE hope b/c the teachers in G's class are so wonderful. it was a BIG adjustment for her since she had never been away from me before, and she absolutely loves it.  yesterday i wanted her to stay home with me and she begged to go.  i have never seen her so excited for anything.  at 3 yr old, they just meet 2/week, and it is conveniently located such that BP could do errands or other activities with Gianna if she wanted (we do music class right at hope or a nearby library time).

It might be nicer, though, to have it closer to BP's house in the winter?

Good luck deciding, I'm sure you'll end up with a program you love!

How much does the 3 year old preschool cost?

  • Faith Lutheran Church has a great 3 year old program. They actually do 2, 3, and 4 year old, and a Pre-K option for preschool.  They are right off University in WDM. We toured there to send Harli there for 2 year old preschool.  I work at Hope but there is no 2 year old program so we had to send her elsewhere. The Director was great and the kids really seem to be happy and enjoying themselves.  They use Creative Curriculum as their base curriculum.  Each week there is a different theme.  There is center time and structured learning time.  You can still fill out the "intent to enroll" form.  They don't start finalizing people until February.

I will agree with All-His that Hope has a great preschool program. Harli will go there for 3 and 4 year old preschool, mainly because it is just downstairs from the daycare. The teachers are amazing.  I believe you can still register for Hope.  Call Jan Hoyt at 515-222-1520 and she will answer any questions you may have.

All - His, who is G's teacher?
