Visiting Austin this weekend-What do do?

Hi everyone, I'll be visiting Austin this weekend-tagging along on a business trip with my husband. First trip in a while without kids!  So I'm looking for suggestions of fun things to see and do.  And especially good places to eat!  I love a good steak, and would love to have some great barbeque since I'm from NJ and barbeque doesn't really exist up here. We're staying downtown by the convention center.  We'll have a rental car so driving is ok too.

Thanks so much!

Jodi

Re: Visiting Austin this weekend-What do do?

  • For BBQ downtown you should go to Ironworks. I also like Uncle Billy's on Barton Springs Rd.
  • I live up north so I don't go downtown that much but I know of a few good places that are fun to try. It will be rainy this weekend so I don't know how much you'll want to be outside. There's some really good food trailers (Austin has a ton of them) and there's two that I like that are right next to each other - Odd Duck and Gourdough's on 1219 S. Lamar. Odd Duck has gourmet small plates from local farms and Gourdough's is an airstream trailer that makes hot fresh giant donuts (many awesome flavors). The best barbecue place I've been to here is the Salt Lick. I think they have a location in Round Rock and in Driftwood though so kind of far for you to go.

Also, I've always liked taking people to the Alamo Drafthouse - http://drafthouse.com/austin/south_lamar They have good food & drinks and since you're leaving your kids at home, it's a fun place to see a movie because they don't allow children or teens without parents and they enforce their no talking/texting policy well. It's just a fun experience. Also, you can't go wrong with visiting 6th street, just for some fun :) Hope you have a fun time this weekend!

  • I haven't been, but I've heard wonderful things about Austin Land & Cattle (not to be confused with the chain Texas Land & Cattle) for steak.

Threadgill's is one of my favorite Austin restaurants along with Kerbey Lane, Magnolia Cafe and Trudy's. The food trucks are a lot of fun and the South Congress area is nice to walk around and shop if it's not too nasty outside.

The Alamo Drafthouse is the only place that I will see movies now (they spoiled me!) if you need to stay inside. The Texas State History museum is also neat.
