Phone interview? What do I need to know?

Hi ladies!  I have a phone interview on Monday morning for an inside sales position.  I've never had a phone interview before.  How do I prepare?  What can I expect?  Anything you can tell me will help greatly.  Thank you!

Re: Phone interview? What do I need to know?

  • I prepared and expected pretty much like an in-person interview. A few thoughts:

Do it in a quiet room with no distractions

    Don't eat or drink

If you're at home, some people dress up like they're going on an in-person interview to get in the right mindset

Some people tape a stick figure face to a wall so they have "someone" to focus on when answering questions

Smile. They'll hear it in your voice.

Have a copy of your resume in front of you to refer to. And a pen and paper so you can take notes

Often they're more screening interviews, so the questions may be more general

    GL!

  • If possible, use a land line.  Cell phones drop calls all too often.

    And everything Dr. Loretta said.

  • I love phone interviews!  I agree with the advice above and would also offer that you listen carefully and don't interrupt the interviewer (which tends to occur on calls).  Also, have your resume in front of you and write down additional points you want to mention to "sell" yourself in the interview. The beauty of the phone interview is they don't see you reading off your resume.

  • Ditto on everything Dr. Loretta said. Especially smile. Don't be too uptight!

If you'd like, or if it would be practical, make a list of questions that you would like to ask. I had a phone interview once and I got the job because I "asked such excellent questions" and it made them believe I was genuinly very interested in the position. But you want them to be informed questions so you don't sound like you have no clue what the job is even about. Make sense? Maybe I should give an example...
The position I was going for was to work at a wildlife rehabilitation center. One of my questions, among others, was what if they got a call about an injured animal that wasn't native? They aren't allowed to treat and release non-native animals and my boss really appreciated a question like that.

Maybe have a list of popular questions they'll likely ask and you'll have your answers ready? But know them well enough to not have to read off the paper....that's kind of obvious in your voice too, like your smile.

Hopefully you won't get stuck with a question like, "In 200 words or less, tell me...."!!! I was like WTF?? This isn't an essay, it's an interview! Needless to say, I didn't get that position.

  • I was told to stand up while doing phone interviews--your voice will project better, and you will sound more confident.
