tmo question

Hi ladies, i'm posting from my nook so please excuse my typos or weird formatting. Tmo comes next friday- how much do I need to pack beforehand or will they help? I'm new to military life and dh has been overseas our entire first year of marriage so I really do not know what to expect. In other news, dh will be home in time for the holidays :)

Re: tmo question

  • In addition to what KC, I did pack a few of my delicate electronics myself, and they were cool with that.  I just didn't seal the boxes.

Before my most recent move, I packed everything and put it into storage 6 months in advance (odd circumstance).  I wasn't there when the movers came to my storage unit (a friend was my proxy), but apparently they barely even looked in the boxes.  They did retape a few and packed some smaller boxes together into big ones, but that's about it.  That said, I wouldn't have packed on my own if I had the choice to let someone else do it :)

It does help if you make sure rooms are grouped well.  If you have office supplies in your kitchen, unpacking will be an even bigger mess.  Who has office supplies in a kitchen, you ask?  H does.  And kitchen supplies in the bathroom.  His boxes from his remote in Korea were insane.

  • Thanks ladies, that certainly removes a lot of stress! I already packed a few things but I'll continue to organize to make the unpacking easier.

  • Have you had anyone come yet to do a pre-pack inspection?  They will usually let you know if there is anything special you need to do.  Usually they have you unplug all the electronics, like video game systems and stuff.

  • You don't have to pack anything but if you want to you can.  My mother ended up packing/organizing a bunch of things in my house (I left a week before TMO came) and they didn't unpack any of it they just  left it as is.

You will need to take things off the walls (pics) and take down all curtains and blinds.  Be sure to defrost your freezer and drain your washer.

If you are going to be driving yourself to your PDS then I would pack the car with the things that you don't want them to pack that way you know they don't accidentally get packed. Also make sure your trash is empty.  They will pack it full if you don't.

If you're moving appliances of any sort, I'd recommend unhooking them a few days prior, for sure. Nothing like forgetting there's water in the lines the day they're loading the truck. /sigh...lol

I think it depends on your movers, because in our last move we didn't have to take a single picture off the wall.  We just had to worry about electronics.  I'm guessing each company is different, and they will tell you what they want you to do at the inspection.

  • I got bitched_at for taking my pictures off the wall and my stuff out of my cabinets. We leftour apartment for good 30 minutes after the movers were done. How else was I suppose to patch holes in the wall and paint it when we weren't going to stick around longer than to load up the cars and double check nothing was left behind?

  • I will add that tmo is coming a week before DH comes home, so when we get to his next assignment our stuff *should* get there right as we do. That's the hope at least. I will have to set the things aside that I'll need for the week before we leave. I'm also living with my mom right now and the appliances are all hers. We'll have to get new ones when we get there. I'm gettting super excited :)
