Quick Tricare question

When DH enlisted and after bootcamp I went to get my ID I was told that I would atoumatically be enrolled in Tricare Standard.  Someone mentioned to me today that that is not the case and that I would be on Prime and if I wanted to be on Standard then I needed to fill out paperwork for that.  Anyone know which is which?

Re: Quick Tricare question

  • If your base has a clinic then you will be enrolled in Prime. With Prime you will have to go through the base clinic for a PCM and any other medical needs. If they don't have the services you need them you will have to get a referral off base.

With Standard you can go anywhere as long as they are part of the network. (You may have to pay a copay or above what Tricare deems reasonable)

ETA: My case was a fluke apparently. If your base has a clinic then you have the option of enrolling in Prime.

  • PP is not entirely correct. You were enrolled in Standard when you were entered into DEERS. If you did not enroll in Prime, you are still on Standard.

If you want to stay on Standard, do nothing. If you want to enroll in Prime you will have to go to the Tricare office on base/post and fill out some paperwork. Depending what day you turn in the paperwork it can take up to 2 weeks for your enrollment to kick in.

  • You are automatically enrolled in Standard. Even if the base has a clinic. Mine had a clinic and I had to go to the TRICARE office and enroll in prime.

Perhaps it was because my husband entered basic? From the moment he got there I had Standard benefits. When we went to the TRICARE office to submit a claim from when I did not have my ID yet, I switched over to Prime.

  • Thanks, that is what I thought.

I was in fact automatically enrolled in Prime. When H and I got married I was on Standard. 4 months later when I met him at our current base (after he finished a TDY and I ended my job back home) - I got a letter from Tricare that I was now on Prime, neither of us did anything to change it......  I guess I am the special apple here.

Being enrolled onto Prime USUALLY requires paperwork. You're automatically enrolled into Standard and Prime is something you have to do yourself.

Shan, is your name common? They very well could have mixed you up with someone else. Hell, I just got a call that I was supposed to come in to Nellis for a pulmonary exam. They just had the wrong KC. It happens a lot.

Nope, and it was right on the PCM card and my online profile switched. I remember having a WTF moment when the letter and the card came in the mail. H had no idea there were even different levels of coverage let alone changing it. I just figured it was an automatic thing because our base has a clinic whereas before I was living at home with only a reserve base 100+ miles away.  If I was going to change back I would probably dig a little deeper to see what happened, but I'm having no complaints right now.
