Who is building their house instead of buying one?

Re: Building your house?

  • We built our house, and also bought it. :P

  • We had our first home built. Sold it, and now we're building again.
  • Just finished building my house and I LOVE it!  I love the fact that every facet of my house was designed and / or decided by me - the matching railing design for our 2nd floor and front gates, the design and layout of our kitchen, the floorplan, the decorative details on our home's exterior, etc.  It truly is my own  custom built house.  I feel soo proud!

Awesome! Did you go to any websites that will let you "build" an online "home"?

  • They should be starting construction on our new home in January.  We have spent the last couple of weekends at the builder's design center.  It's pretty cool to pull together your own ideas.  We can't wait to move in.

  • I have spent my entire career in homebuilding, so our last two homes were new construction. The most recent one we didn't make the selections as we purchased the model home, but we liked the options that were chosen for the home.

  • I would love to do this, but there aren't empty lots for sale where we want to live.
  • We bought our first house existing - lived there for 6 years and sold it (we sold this year).   We planned to live there 5-7 years, and then buy something bigger once we were more established in our careers and could afford more.

We are building our long-term house now - with a production builder rather than custom.   It boiled down to the fact that the better lots/locations were owned by the production builder.   The lots that the custom builder had left in the area we wanted were awful (corner by the entrance of the neighborhood, overlooking busy roads).

We're building our 2nd house.  I prefer existing.  I told H since the beginning I wanted existing, but he wanted a new home.  Tried to go with spec home, but we were not happy with what we saw.

We're now in the process of building our custom home.  Too much headache for me!  This is why I prefer existing.  lol.  I hope it's worth it though.
