Re: When did you find out about Santa?

  • I was 7, I think. 2nd grade. It is funny, I can remember the moment exactly. I must have been on the verge of not believing, because I don't remember being really upset. It was more of a, wait.a.minute. moment.

Backstory - in 2nd grade, I feathered my bangs. Yep. I was that cool kid. So, every morning, my mom would feather my bangs in her bathroom. That year, I had gotten a pogo stick from Santa. Sitting right there what I was waiting for my mom to finish my bangs, was the receipt for the pogo stick. I picked it up and showed it to her, and said something like, "hey mom, I thought Santa got me the pogo stick". I don't remember her trying to fix the mistake or tell me I wasn't remembering correctly. I just remember that was the last moment I believed. Happily, I didn't have the earth shattering experience.

  • I was 6 and an older kid on the school bus told me. Very uncool of him/her (I can't remember). But I went home and asked my dad outright and he confirmed. I am so glad he didn't lie to me at that point. It's one thing to do the Santa myth, but I don't know, it seems like it would have been wrong for my dad to lie when I asked him straight, so I'm glad he didn't. I don't remember being upset. In fact, I asked my dad if I could help put out the gifts for my little sister now that I was in the know. He said no, and I think asked me to pretend for awhile longer for my sis. I have no idea when she found out, or if I was the one to tell her.

  • I was a late believer, not really exactly sure of my age, but more than likely in the 11-13 category.  My parents kept presents in their room under a sheet and we were told not to go in their room, but I was a snooper.  I found some presents labeled from Santa and had my "ah ha" moment.

  • I really don't remember how I found out, but I was at least 11.  I think I wanted to keep believing because it was fun and my mom did a really good job at it.  They kept the presents from Santa at my grandparents so there was no chance at finding them and after we would go to sleep (which was usually late because I was excited), my dad would drive to my grandparents and bring back the presents.  Santa always had different wrapping paper, different tags, and completely different handwriting than my mom.

  • I can't remember the actual age I found out, but I had an idea that he wasn't real much sooner than I admitted to my parents.  I was a selfish child and my mom always said that once you stop believing in the magic of Xmas everything changed and I was afraid if I fessed up that I would not get presents.  I found some presents in the guest bedroom closet that were later found under the tree from "Santa."

A few years later my friend at school pretty much confirmed my suspicions and I confronted my parents and they told me the truth.  I cried and wailed for a good hour and thought that Xmas would never come again.

My Mom however still gives DH & I presents from "Santa."  LOL.

  • I was five and I remember it like it was yesterday. For some reason, my parents had the idea to have Santa come while we were at the Christmas Eve service at our church. When we got home, all the presents were under the tree, in the stockings, etc. It didn't add up for me so I started grilling my mom. "Why didn't he come later at night? Why does his handwriting look like yours? Why does Santa have Kmart brand crayons?" She finally told me the truth about Santa and that the neighbor had come over while we were at church. At the time, I hated my 3 year old sister so I promptly went and told her Santa wasn't real. My parents were not happy with me!

  • I think I was around 7. I used to write elaborate notes to Santa asking him to write back and I realized that the handwriting Santa wrote back with was my Dad's. He has very distinct handwriting. I would also put out cookies for Santa that I knew my Dad hated and then I would count how many were in the main cookie container so I could tell he had just put the cookies back in the container. I also caught him coming in my room one night to take my teeth and put money under my pillow.
  • I was in 2nd grade... no one told me, I was just a very serious child haha and during the time leading up to Christmas I realized that it was impossible for Santa to ride all around the world in one night and visit every child and I think I was noticing the suspicious behavior of my parents. But I kept it to myself because most of my classmates also believed and I wanted to keep up the ruse for my little brother, which benefited me because Santa kept having to bring me presents too as long as my brother believed. And he believed for a much longer time than me.

  • I was in fifth grade. My teacher told us about his plans to buy presents from Santa for his kids. He made it very clear that Santa wasn't real. I was devastated.

My mom was amazing at being Santa. She always managed to make the living room look magical on Christmas morning and was a genius at hiding presents. Most of my friends didn't believe, but when asked my mom would respond,  "Santa is magic and if you believe then it is true". I chose to believe until that day when I couldn't deny the truth anymore.

  • I was in third grade...I think I remember just thinking it wasn't true anymore and asking my dad if reindeer could really fly. He kind of avoided the question and gave a general answer of "If you believe it can happen, it can...just like all magic." or something. Then I overheard him telling my grandparents about the conversation and it kinda confirmed everything. I have three younger siblings and the youngest is nine, so we've always done Santa in my parent's house (and DH and I still get Santa presents from them). The 9 year old won't admit it outright, but we know she hasn't believed for awhile, possibly since last Christmas. My parents are amazing at it though...They used to hide the presents in my dad's old antique car, never would have thought to look there. They used crazy handwriting, different wrapping paper, put oats/carrots outside in the snow from where the reindeer "dropped their snacks", put my dad's old boots with ash on them from the fire next to the fireplace, lots of notes from Santa, etc. One of my brothers believed until he was at least 11 because of all of that.
