Traveling & Jewelry
Do you travel with your engagement and wedding ring? I am planning on a trip to Jamaica this winter and a month in Europe this summer. Would I be better off wearing a simple gold band? Am I just being paranoid? My rings are insured, but I would hate to lose them.

The only time I leave my e-ring at home is if I'm going to be in the water a lot or doing a lot of outdoor stuff that might damage it (or me). I've worn my ring to Europe no problem.

I wear mine. I just leave them in the safe if we're going to the beach.
We were in Europe over Thanksgiving and I wore my rings. People wear jewelry in Europe, too...

I always wear mine, but I'm not paranoid about losing it. I do have a friend who was playing in the snow while on vacation in Tahoe when her (insured) engagement ring went flying off. A year later when the snow was melted someone turned it in and somehow she was tracked down so it could be returned. Someone had a good story about snorkeling to find their wedding ring, MDGirl maybe? Anyway, my point is that if you are doing a lot of activity and you are worried it may come off just leave it home and buy a fake ring. No sense in chancing it if you are that concerned.
ETA: Wanted to add that if you are worried about them being stolen, I think you are just being paranoid. In that case, I'd definitely wear them and wouldn't think twice.
I've never been to Jamaica, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I've felt fine wearing my rings on other islands, so I probably would there too.
I've done a fair amount of traveling in Western Europe (and a little in Eastern Europe) and I've never felt any more uncomfortable than I would in a mid-large US city, so I usually go ahead and wear my rings. That said, I have some Neapolitan friends who won't/don't wear jewelry downtown or on the city's public transportation. I haven't had a problem wearing mine, but fwiw-- if you are heading to Naples, IT (and as an additional disclaimer, I do mean literally the city itself... you're fine on the AC, Capri, Ischia, etc).

Yeah, we were on Kauai with friends of ours and he lost his wedding band in the ocean. The hotel gave them the name of a guy who dives to find lost jewelry, and he found it several months later. Before we went in they had sworn up and down that their rings were fit tight and couldn't come off.
We usually leave our rings at home if we're going on a vacation where we'll be doing a lot of hiking and swimming. I wear them in Europe, but if it worries <i>you</i> then I don't see the harm in leaving them home.

I wear both of mine everywhere. The only time I take them off is when I'm showering because our drain is big enough that they could go down it.
On our HM in Hawaii, I wore them for our dolphin excursion (they just had me turn my e-ring around so the stone couldn't scratch the dolphins), at the beach, in the pool, in the ocean, etc. They're insured, so I wasn't too worried anyhow. Honestly, the point of them is to wear them IMO, so why would I want to leave them at home every time I go on a trip, KWIM?
I will wear my ring just about anywhere (excluding swimming in ocean, rivers, lakes, etc), but it is a gold band...
The only place I have traveled without my rings is Africa. And that was less because I felt unsafe or concerned that I would lose them than that I didn't want to be overly flashy in an area where I know many people can't afford to eat.
I agree with PP that said the point of the rings is to be worn. IMO, you're no less safe wearing a diamond in Europe or Jamaica or wherever than you are in NYC or LA or anywhere else. If you're doing water activities lock them in the safe. Otherwise, you should be fine. I've worn my rings all over the place.

This. I did not take mine on the HM because we were doing so many water sports. When I travel to Europe or big cities (LA) for work I wear a simple diamond (or CZ) ring. I found it in my yard and wore it on my right hand for the wedding ceremony. So it is a sentimental stand in. My ring is not insured so I take special care. For the price of insurance for 10 years I could buy a really nice piece of jewelry. I tend to be more cautious which some could call paranoid but I do not want to be robbed or worse for a ring I am wearing.
Really? How much were you quoted for the extra insurance? Mine is 60 bucks a year.

It depends on your ring and where you are going. A huge diamond surrounded by more diamonds is bound to cause a higher chance of issue (mugged/stolen) than a simple stone or band. Going to a metro city is also very different than Jamaica or other poorer island. Granted there are high-end places but look at the general populations of where you will be and who is around you. If you travel alone or go off by yourself, this is something else to factor.
Personally, I don't wear my rings to several islands that are more underdeveloped but I do wear a gold band. I normally go exploring and don't want to bring unnecessary attend to myself and give reason for any theft/attacks.
I do wear it throughout the US and Europe though. While this can be just as dangerous, I feel better. Regardless, I leave it in the safe if I go to the beach because I really don't like to wear jewelry there.
