How much does a 6 mos old baby weigh...?

My son's class at school 'adopted a family' and they need diapers and winter clothing for their 6 mos old baby.  I haven't bought diapers in a long time...and when I looked at them yesterday, I saw they were sized by weight and I have no idea how much this kid weighs.  Gah!?

Re: How much does a 6 mos old baby weigh...?

  • I looked it up with google and found 16-18lbs...does that seem right?  I think I want to err on the side of caution and possibly buy bigger if necessary because I figure he can always wear the bigger sizes, but might not be able to wear the smaller sizes.
  • dd was 19 pounds

But keep in mind that disposable diapers tend to run small. So even if the diaper say, for example, they are 12-20 pounds, and the baby is 17 pounds, he might fit better in the next size up.

  • I would get size 4.  They could always wear diapers that are a little too big or save them for the near future.  DD was in size 4 at 6 months and stayed in that size for the longest.  She always had to move up early before hitting the weight for that size.

  • I'd buy at a chain store and include the receipt.
My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.
  • my baby is 7 months and he's been wearing a size 4 for about 6 weeks now.  he's 20 lbs.

  • They are supposed to double their birth weight by 6 months & triple their birth weight by 1 year.
  • My 3 month old nephew weighs 16 pounds and wears size 2 diapers. He was only 6 pounds 8 ounces at birth, but has gained weight like crazy. I agree to buy on the larger size and include a gift receipt.

  • My daughter is 5 months and just growing out of size 1 (she's 50% percentile), so I'd buy size 2 or 3.

  • I'd buy at least a 4 - all my kids were in 4-5 Pampers at 6 months. All were 23-26lbs but one (18lbs at 12months). Even if they can't exchange them, too big is easier to deal with than too small. And clothing size 9m to 12m.

  • My 18lb 6 month old wears size 3 huggies. He can wear a 4 but they are a little big.

  • Usually by six months you double the birth weight.  So, if they were a big baby, you can go with the bigger size.
  • - Just spoke with someone last night who had a 6month old grandson...he was born at 10lbs and weighs 22 pounds now.

  • DS was 15 lbs at 6 months, born at 5.5 lbs. Babies vary a lot, so I'd be safe and size up or provide a gift receipt.
  • I could tell you how much the 6 month old I nanny for weighs or what size diaper she wears or whatever, but it differs per child. In this case, "bigger is better" - they can still use them in months to come if they're currently too big.

  • Ours weighed about 16 lbs at that time, but I would go bigger in your case.

  • My 6 month old is in Size 2.   I believe he's around 16.5 lbs or so.    So yeah, 16-18 lbs sounds right.
  • Just lurking here, but my 18 month old is 21 lbs and is in a size 3. She is very small for her age though. I would guess about a size 2 for a 6  month old.

  • I'd go size 3 or 4. DS is 4 months and weighs 16lbs, 4oz. He is on the big size for his age (70th% for weight, off the charts for height!) but from the bump boards, it seems like a lot of our LOs are near that range right now
  • My daughter is 6 months and just went from a size 2 to 3 this week.  I would get a size 4 so that if they are the incorrect size, they would be on the bigger size.  Like others said, babies are all different but a size 4 seems like a good bet.
