Any servers/former out there?

My town is hiring a TON of servers! Everywhere I look, restaurants (downtown area and others) are hiring more wait staff than anything else. I have a teaching degree, and now own a small business (run from home) but need more $$$$$. Please share your experiences, good or bad. How much can you make working 3-5 nights a week? I served at a small restaurant when I was in college and made good money, but the place closed. I worked day hours (breakfast/lunch) but not at night. Just wondering about experiences/money potential.

Thanks!

Re: Any servers/former out there?

  • I served in college at a nice-ish 1800s themed restaurant (I had to wear a big period dress and everything).

I hated it with every ounce of my being. Being a server is really hard (as is any job where you're dealing with the public). When people are hungry, they're irritable.

However, I did make decent money. The hourly wage didn't even put a drop in the bucket, but I made about $350-$400 in tips a week serving a few nights and a couple of days a week. It was more than enough for my living expenses then.

So, I guess the moral of this is:

    Bad experience, Good money.

  • I am a former server and am currently regretting moving up to management. I made just as much money as a server, didn't have as much stress and worked less hours. Unfortunately I am not in a position to change jobs at the moment to go back to serving.

On a good week I could clear $600 just in tips working five 8 hr evening shifts at a chain restaurant that focuses on home cooking and has rocking chairs on the porch.

    Good hint Smile

  • It's tough work, but good quick money. You have to be able to multi-task, deal with people's rude behavior and still smile, and be on your feet all day.

I had many a day of not knowing when my shift would be over. And working weekends is usually mandatory.

  • You have to be great with people, energetic, not a complanier, and comfortable on your feet. Your schedule HAS to be flexible. And you have to be OK with never knowing exactly how much you will make (you could make $250 one night and $25 the next.)

All that said, I loved waiting tables. I just did it for a year full time after a lay-off, and before that I worked PT for 2 years to suplement my income. I worked for a small business and the owners were AMAZING. We had a ton of repeat customers who loved us (and me; repeat customers are your biggest tippers). I had fun with it and sometimes even miss it. Working 4 shifts a week, I could usually make about $400 (but my situation was complicated. Realisitcally, I could have made $600 working M, T, Fri, Sat nights). Between that and freelancing during the day, I was fine.
