Ugh help! (smoke issue)

So I recently moved into an apt right before thanksgiving. The carpet is brand new but as soon as you walk in the house it has a smell. I thought maybe it just needeed to be aired out and I did that and it didn't help. To me it smells like smoke and I think whoever lived here smoked so much its in the walls. To test this I took the lavender pine sol and water and wiped the walls and that worked for a while for I can smell it again. What do you guys think I can do to help with that smell? TIA

  • You can try leaving a bowl of vinegar out.  That would absorb the smell.  If it doesn't work long term the only other thing I could think of is to use Killz primer on the wall.  But why not complain to the landlord and see if they will do something?

  • If it's in the walls, there isn't much you can do. The walls need repainted with an odor-blocking primer/paint. Talk to your landlord.

  • Have you tried changing the air filters?  That can really make a difference.

  • I agree with PP's - they're going to have to paint for you.

  • thanks everyone! I changed the filter and left a bowl of vinegar out. Then I have a febreeze plug in the outlet and I can already tell the difference. I also invited my friends over and they said it didn't smell like smoke like I thought but all I can say is the smell is out and I am happy :D

  • Paint the walls.  Even if it's in your lease that you're not allowed to do that, talk with the landlord personally, and offer to give them the choice of colors, so it's still to their liking for their property.  But paint is the only thing that will semi-permanently get the smell out.  That, and spraying the walls with vodka or just straight alcohol might work.  If there's unpainted wood trim, go for Johnson's no-buff wax cleaner to get at those.  Good luck, that sound frustrating!
