Antibiotic/Yeast Infection Question

Like I said in 613marriedlady's post, I am in the same stupid boat she is.

I started an antibiotic and finished it a couple days after Thanksgiving. A few days later, I got a yeast infection. My original problem didn't go away, so now I'm on round 2 of antibiotics (today is day 3 of 7). I obviously want to treat this YI but my OB said to only use Monistat 7. I'm not sure if I should go ahead and start it now, or wait until this round of antibiotics is over? I don't want to finish the M7 just to get another YI when this round of antibiotics is over, ya know? What do you think?

Re: Antibiotic/Yeast Infection Question

  • I understand where you're coming from with not wanting to go through treatment twice, but YIs are SO miserable!  I would start the treatment ASAP and worry about another one cropping up only if it happens.

BTW, a girl on another board was having this problem the other day, and the suggestions given were 1) put plain yogurt up your vag or 2) put a garlic clove up your vag, if you're more into a natural remedy.

  • Wow!  I feel like you just read my mind and asked my own questions, Tiff.  Ugh.  These damn infections (of all kinds, the ones we need the antibiotics for and the ones that result in them!) need to freakin' go away!  I feel your pain!

  • I just had the same thing happen to me. Did you see Jennr's page (I think it was you she paged) about probiotics? I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Ok just found it and obviously you saw it since you responded.  I *think* probiotics work for YI too... I need to do some research.

  • I think you're right, I'm ready for it to go away!

Sorry you're feeling crummy too, Emma. It must be that time of the year. Blah!

Thanks Lisa, I did see it. I was even out today and forgot to pick some up though. I really should get some to keep on hand!

  • I HIGHLY suggest making probiotics part of your daily regimen. :-) My prenatals have probiotics in them (Rainbow Light).

Yes  Those are actually the prenatals I bought a couple of weeks ago, but they are giant! I am such a pill-taking-wimp, so I went back to my tried & true Nature Made. :( And now I have a wasted bottle of Rainbow Light with one missing, lol.

  • I was just in the same boat. I was even taking probiotics but I think the sheer amount and strength on the antibiotics I was on was just too much. I decided to use a topical cream like vagisil to relieve my symptoms while waiting until my antibiotics were almost gone before starting treatment. It worked for me!

You can have them! FOR REAL! I was actually going to offer on here after I decided I couldn't take them, but I didn't know if that was weird. I don't think I have your address anymore, so if you want to FB it to me I will send them out this week. I have to make a stop at the post office anyway! :)

Hmm, I wonder if that's pg-safe. I realllllly don't want to treat the YI just to have it come back again a week after this round of antibiotics is over!

  • Probiotics definitely help with YI.  I spend an extended period of time on antibiotics a few years back and never got a YI, which I credit to a good probiotic.  I personally have had success with Kyodophilus 9, which combines several different probiotics.  It also does not require refrigeration.

I an think an external cream like vagisil should be fine too.

  • Good luck. I think I would start the M7 now, just because of how miserable I was. I take asidophilus and the guy at my health store recommended 80million, while taking antibiotics. (There's all different 'millions' you can choose and some levels were pretty small.) If you haven't bought it before, I'll warn you now. They are a little pricey.
