Infant stomach flu- when to worry?

Our house got hit pretty hard with the stomach flu this weekend. All four of us were sick within a matter of 24 hours. DH and I recovered the quickest and Ella bounced back pretty quickly but Brody is having a tough time. It all started Thursday afternoon- he was fine all day but the sitter went to wake him from his nap at 3:00 and he threw up all over her. He threw up 7 more times that night. The next morning he was a bit better but started vomiting again at noon. A total of 5 times that day (Friday) but seemed to perk up Friday evening and act a little more energetic. We did mostly Pedialyte Friday. Saturday morning he woke up and was extremely lethargic and still vomiting. I took him into the pedi who said he was showing beginning stages of dehydration but he had a semi wet diaper that morning and still cried tears so she said push the Pedialyte and call if things don't improve. He held down a bit of Pedialyte but began vomiting an hour and a half later. He has only vomited 3 times today but taken a total of 9 oz formula and probably 4 oz Pedialyte.

Do I take him back in tomorrow? I just feel like there is nothing the pedi's office can do for him. On Saturday she mentioned that he might need to go to Blank for an IV if things didn't improve...do you think it sounds like that is what needs to happen? I feel SO bad for my little man. He is so lethargic and miserable. He just whimpers and snuggles :(

Re: Infant stomach flu- when to worry?

  • I don't post very often...But, I think that I would take him in if I were in your shoes.  That is quite a long time to be vomiting that much without becoming dehydrated.    It's so hard to know what to do with little ones, since they can't tell you exactly how they feel.

Take care!  I hope everyone is back to feeling well again soon!

  • L had pneumonia when she was 8 months old and got dehydrated quickly after vomiting and not being able to keep any fluids down. They admitted her and put her on fluids and I was amazed at how quickly she perked up. It really made a huge difference.

Its so sad to see your kiddo so sick but if they give you the option for fluids you might want to give it a try.

Edit: I also wanted to say the flu hit our house a couple weeks ago, it was ungodly. Hope everyone is one the mend soon

  • Thanks for your replies! Ugh- I hate this. I just dont know whether to head to Blank tonight or see how he is in the morning and check with the pedi. My poor little man :( I've done the whole dehydrated route with my hyperemesis and its awful and I know how quickly it can get out of control so it scares me :(

  • I tend to over react, but think I would take him in.   if anything it would be a piece of mind for me.
