Backup cameras on cars - thoughts?
We have the option with the car we are buying to get the backup camera and I wonder if it is worth it. In the grand scheme of things it is probably less than $500 more. Part if me likes the idea of it but part of me wonders if it is really that usefull and if it is a waste. Anyone have one or experience with it?
ETA: it is an suv not car if that makes a difference.
Re: Backup cameras on cars - thoughts?
I have one on my car (it came with it standard). It was something I swore was ridiculous and I would never use...now I wonder how I lived without it! I love it because it has colors to show me how close I am getting to things so I don't 1) hit them or 2) Have to repeatedly park, realize I am way off, and do it again.
A totally non-essential item, but I am enjoying it.

I got one in my Equinox last year. It was part of on upgrade package. It wasn't the reason I got the upgrade but it was an added bonus. I really didn't think I'd like it, or even really use it. I love it. The only time mine doesn't help is when it's raining. I was in a rental for a week and realized just how much I missed it. Mine doesn't have colors to show distance like PP's, but I does give you a good field of view.
Have you seen my monkey?
I don't have a camera, but I have the backup sensor that beeps at me when I'm close to something. I drive a Tahoe (read:huge) so it's really helpful to me. I tend to like to back in to parking spaces if I can so it's easier to get when I leave. It's very helpful for me!
This. I never rely solely on the camera. I still look over my shoulders, but it sees things that I can't. (It saw my neighbor's cat that was hanging out behind my car the other day. I couldn't see it in any of my mirrors.)
In a neighborhood full of kids, I really like having it. There is no way I could see that much out of the back and sides of my minivan without it.
A relative of mine backed up over his young daughter and killed her many years ago. Of course the camera provides no guarantees, but I have to think some tragedies like that have been prevented by the cameras.
We have one in our truck ( came with the package)...we like it.
my new car (highlander) has one. its really nice to have, though i'm still getting used to it.
i didn't really care but dh was really glad that it came with it.
I absolutely love mine. It's one of the good ones that shows you green/yellow/red zones. There have been multiple times I wouldn't have been able to get out of a parking garage space, or into a parallel parking space, without it.
It has kept me from running over our trash can repeatedly. We are out of the stage where there would be kids running behind the car in the driveway.
It gives you such an advantage when backing out, I really can't understand why someone wouldn't want one. You absolutely CANNOT see nearly as much by using mirrors and windows. I will never buy a car without one again.
DH's truck has one that's a few years older than mine. He likes it for getting the trailer hitch positioned-- but with the truck it's also really helpful in tight parking spaces.
Its really incomparable to the beeping sensors.

Honestly I rarely use (look at) the camera. It came standard on our cars. It gives me a head ache so the traditionalist in me just looks the old fashion way.
What I do love and will always get again are the back up sensors that beep. Love them.
I don't have the camera, but I'm the same way with the beeps on my car.
My mom's Yukon has the camera and since that thing is HUGE, it is worth it when I'm driving.
I probably wouldn't spend the $500 just to get that
