DFW and Orlando Nesties - Help!

Hi -

My house closes on 12/30/11 and we are moving either (1) local in Denver for about a month until we move to ... either:, (2) the DFW area (close to the DFW airport)  or to (3) to the Orlando area.  This entire move is  for my DH's job and of course this uncertainty is more difficult because I have to give up my career (at least for awhile) until our family is settled.  We may not know where we will end up until we close on our house.

I am looking for your DREAM location to live that has fabulous schools for my little kids.   My dream is to have A rated schools with a lot of parent involvement, a safe neighborhood with other young families and to live in a more suburban area where my kids can easily play outside [think Wisteria Lane without the creepy drama].  If money were not a huge concern, where would you live?  Housing subdivision?  School names?  Other suggestions?

Also, I'm thinking of renting the PODS to hold my "house" until we find a place to live.  I truly see us living in a hotel or motel until we can find a place to live.  I want to know if anyone has feedback on PODS and if they are recommended.

Any good books to read to a 4.5 & 5 year old about this major change in their life?

Thanks in advance.

  • We have quite an active DFW local board. Re-post your question about the best areas to live/schools there, and you'll get great info. http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/3230641/ShowForum.aspx

I don't know any names, but I do know that the suburbs close to the airport are where the best schools are. It's also a bit pricey to buy a house there, because you are paying for that quick access to the airport and everything else + great schools. The suburb names that come to mind are Keller, Bedford, and Euless. But don't take my word for it -- check the DFW local board for sure.

  • I'm from the DFW area until recently! If you are looking for areas around the airport check out:

    Southlake: very nice, very pricey!

Keller: borders Southlake: same great area, cheaper taxes

Coppell and Las Colinas has great spots and strong schools.

Caution about HEB: Hurst, Euless, Bedford.  Solid, good pockets of great location/school combination, but traffic is a beast in this corridor!  These cities flow in the order H-E-B, so you may hear HEB area often.

Stay out of anything with Dallas Independent School District. Even if the real estate agent says "x" city the place to be but has DISD  schools!  The district is a complete disaster and bankrupt.   You can not sell a home in this district.

If you want a little more for your money, there is a community called Castle Hills off Highway 121.  The homes are beautiful and you are central to a number of highways.  The elem and junior high are within the community and the high school is within 2 miles.  From Castle Hills to the airport is about 20-25 mins, depending on traffic.  One tollroad direct from airport to castle hills.    Lewisville ISD is mixed: Lewisville HS is ok but Castle Hills is zoned for Hebron HS---fantastic high school with science and bio medical magnet program.

    G/L!

  • We used to live in Fort Worth.  We were "true" Fort Worthians and liked it much better than the northern 'burbs... but if you want to be up there I'd go for Keller.  Southlake is a PITA.  Frisco (in Dallas County) is the fastest-growing city in the US right now.  To tell the truth, though, all of those northern suburbs seemed the same to me.  If you blindfolded me and drove me to Keller, Southlake, Frisco, Coppell, etc., I couldn't tell you where I was.

  • I should also add that we loved it there and I miss it like crazy!  Texas is its own kind of special, and I'm not even a native. :)
