Brett has had a fever off and on all weekend. I called the pediatrician and a nurse told me to take his temperature under his arm, and to go to the ER if it got to 104. Last night it was 104.2 under the arm and we went in. They took his temperature rectally (just 30 minutes later) and it was actually 106.3. I was freaking out. Brett could have had a seizure....Maybe this isn't news to anyone else, but I wish I had known that under the arm wouldn't be accurate. His temperature was probably at 104 more than once, and I didn't even realize it.
He is OK now, the doctor thinks it is just a virus. I am going to the pedi today for a follow-up. But I do sort of feel like an idiot that I let him get that hot ![]()
As far as I know, he didn't have a seizure. But I just wish I knew how important a rectal temperature was, before last night!
Re: PSA - Moms
You should always +1 degree for an axillary reading. I still take DD's temp rectally if I suspect her temp is creeping up too high.
I'm glad everything with Brett was okay and he is seemingly doing well now.

My pedi told me that you should add a degree when you're temping under the arm, and to bring them in once it hits 103 that way or 104 rectally. I have a VERY hard time getting a rectal temp on Kennedy because she moves SO much. Fortunately the highest we've ever gotten is 101 under her arm.
How scary! I'm glad he's doing okay now.
What a scary ordeal for you. So glad to hear Brett is doing better. Sorry both you and your little guy had to go through that.
I've never taken a rectal temp on either of my children. Luckily neither of them have had a high temp before that warrented it. They are always so squirmy, I can't imagine being able to do it. I think I need to get a quicker reading thermometer too; I have several and they all take too long.
Wow that is so scary.. I can't even imagine. My cat had a fever once and I could tell he was feeling really bad and I was so upset. I am going to freak out if it happens to my child. I'm glad Brett is ok.
Yeah, Lily had a seizure with a temp of 104. Definitely one of the worst days of my life, even though all in all everything is fine and there's no lasting issues, and she hasn't had one since. I had put her down for a nap at about 4 pm with some ibuprofen because she had a slight fever, and just after 5 I went to check on her, and I called 911 pretty quickly because I didn't know WTF a febrile seizure was. I had no idea what was going on.
So if you're unfamiliar with febrile seizure, you might want to read up on it. One in twenty kids between 6 months and 6 years will have them. Bottomline is that they're scary as hell for mom/dad and no real problem for the child. A friend of mine went through the same with her oldest and her doctor told her, "She'll be fine and will never remember it. You will never forget it, though." Pretty much. I cried every time she had a fever for months because I was scared of going through that again.

I remember when that happened K8. Before that I never knew you could get a seizure from a high fever. Glad that was a one time episode. Poor Lilly. And Poor Mama K8! I would be a total mess.
And sorry to hear about Brett's high temp! I can only imagine how scary that must have been. Macy just got her first cold over Thanksgiving. Thankfully it was mild but even her sniffles and cough had me on edge. I have no idea what I would have done had she had a temp that high! Hope he is feeling better soon.
Baby Macy is here!

Thanks, everyone, for the kind words!! Brett is feeling a little better but still pretty sick. We are doing ibuprofen/tylenol around the clock until he kicks this thing
K8 - that's so traumatizing! I had a febrile seizure when I was younger (not a baby...probably around 3-4) and it's true, you don't remember it!! Thanks for sharing your story. I am so glad it was a one time thing.
