Too advanced for a 10.5 year old? I'm looking for Christmas gifts for my cousin's twins. The girl is reading a lot and into hair/makeup (so I am told; they moved to CA a year ago). I can't really bring myself to support a makeup habit in a pre-teen so any book ideas?
Her brother is still into legos, so he's easy
Re: Hunger Games related...
Depends on the kid, I think. I would have read it at that age, but I always read stuff "older" than me. I think if the parents would be ok with it (it does have a more adult theme), then it should be fine. She'll likely be interested in the movie in March and can always read them a little later.

This is exactly what I would have said.
Suri would read it (she's 10 1/2). I take that back, I tried to get her to read it but she said it bored her. She just has no idea! Hmmph! She reads "older" books often but I really think it depends on the kid. I know some 10 year olds that can't handle that type of book and prefer younger ones.
Question: Is being very much into hair and makeup in a kid thought of as a CA trait? I know Suri has been all over that stuff for some time but has calmed down a bit and seems to be into being a kid again....I think. I don't know. Sometimes she wants to dye her hair. Sometimes she wants to shave her legs. Other times she wants to wear makeup. She definitely likes to "borrow" padded bras. *sigh* What I think you are trying to say is I need to move out of CA and into a state where kids want to be kids and not grown ups.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
lol, bored her?? man.
I don't know about the CA thing. This family used to live in western NJ - almost in PA, and sort of in the country (like there were corn fields 5 mi from their house). She was always kind of socially...advanced? She was a cheerleader in NJ (I think she's on some kind of tumbling squad out there), maybe that has something to do with it? I don't know. She's 10 going on 16.
Funny enough, her brother (who was a football player in NJ) is 10 going on 8. His only interests for Christmas are video games and legos.
