Re: Charleston, SC Anyone been?
We used to live there (and DH's parents still live there).
What's your price range? Do you have anything in particular you want? Steak? Fish?
That would be so wonderful! Also, can you ask for suggestions on must see things at Christmas time? Great places for Christmas lights?

Price range doesnt matter too much. We really like Italian food, steaks and seafood. We will be there for 3 nights..
Also do you know of special Christmas events going on this weekend? Any must dos? Also great places to see pretty Christmas lights?

This is what my friend said:
If the weather is nice, Red's Icehouse in Mt Pleasant (just over the bridge from Downtown is a fun spot (right on the water). Downtown, alot of the restaurants are pricy, but have authentic southern cuisine. My favorite (& not too pricey) is Hominy Grill on Rutledge Ave. Alton Brown & Anthony Bourdain have both done shows there. Good southern cooking, but not snobbish like some of the places.
We went last February. We had kiddos with us, so we didn't do any fine dining, but do not let anyone convince you to go to Jestine's Kitchen. It gets a lot of good reviews, but we went, ordered four completely different entrees, and they were all terrible. Maybe we were just there on an "off" night or something, but... I do not recommend!
For things to do, we enjoyed the Fort Sumter tour, the aquarium, the Angel Oak, Folly Beach, and we went outside of the city to tour Boone Plantation, which was fun, too. I have blog posts up about all of this if you want more info/photos.
Have fun!

Sorry it's taken me a while. All good suggestions above.
For Christmas lights - you MUST go to James Island County Park. It's awesome. In my opinion, it's worth every penny of the $12. Weekends can be busy - so be patient. And go around several times.
Restaurants downtown...I've eaten at a few. Grill 225 and Oak Steakhouse are good. They are pricey - but they are nice for a special occasion. I took DH to Oak Steakhouse for his birthday a few years back - it was super intimate and a very romantic/nice dinner.
Tropical Toast is a good breakfast/brunch/lunch place. It's on Meeting St. just down from the Market but before the Mill House Hotel.
Don't go to Jestine's. Meh. I have heard Hominy is good. Kickin' Chicken is good - mmmmm. We don't eat downtown much (traffic/parking can be a headache).
There are some places a little further out that we love: Aunt Bee's, Madra Rua Irish Pub <--LOVE, and Sesame Burgers (so good). Those are all close together off Sam Rittenburg - I think that's considered North Charleston. It's an industrial/old naval base area.
If you are into history - go check out the USS Hunley exhibit where they are restoring the sub. Angel Oak, Fort Sumter (don't get stuck - the ferry only runs so many hours!), any plantation, aquarium (love it)...all good things to see. Infamous Rainbow Row is worth the walk around. Walk through the market - the grass baskets are a little overpriced, IMO - but there are some other nice things there. The little stores that flank the market are nice to pop into as well.
