Re: Clicky Poll: Trees

  • We go the least effort route. I prelit LED fake tree.
  • I voted one based on this year, but we have 2 fake trees. (one for the upstairs game room and one for the family room)  The one in the game room won't be going up this year though.  We are currently painting and working on the game room, so it's a disaster right now!

  • I voted 1 of each: 1 real tree downstairs in our main room, and one small pink fake tree upstairs for the kids. :)

  • We aren't getting a tree until this weekend...  It will be real..  The tree is one thing I stand firm on.  No fake tree at our house.
  • We have a real big tree, and then two fake small ones ~ one on our fireplace mantel and one upstairs in Charlotte's room :)

  • Growing up, I was a serious Christmas tree snob. In my eyes, fake was wrong, wrong, wrong! I even cared what kind of tree (scotch pine, not a douglas fir).

Well now that the tree is our responsibility (and not my parents' problem), I couldn't be happier with our fake, pre-lit tree. I love that thing and don't see myself ever going back.

  • I love real trees, but my sinuses do not.  We got a real tree the first year we were married, and I was absolutely miserable.

  • We have an additional small 4 ft tree, but I don't count it as a "second" tree.  We literally pull it out of the box and put it out - the ornaments all stay on it and it has no lights.

  • We have a fake tree. I love the ease of it and knowing we can pull it out the day after Thanksgiving without worry that it will die. The Christmas traditionalist in me hates it but all of DH's family is allergic to real trees.  I instead burn lots of pine scented candles to alleviate my "pine=Christmas" thoughts.

  • I used to be a huge proponent of real trees but every year I see them all go to the recycle bin/pile hopefully- (and not a landfill) I cringe.

    Irrational I know.

  • we always had a fake tree when i was growing up and have one now. pre-lit is definitely the way to go.

my roommate's bf got us a real tree in college and i learned why my parents never had - i couldn't breathe for the entire month that it was in our apartment.

We'll make sure ours at least goes out on tree waste day. In south louisiana they use them for wetlands restoration.

In Surfside they're used to rebuild sand dunes and ease the erosion.  http://www.sobatx.org/

And in Bellaire they used to (not sure if they still do this) have chippers at the recycle drop off, you could take your tree to be shredded and bag up some mulch to take home and use on your flower beds.

I do cringe when I see an artificial tree out on the curb after Christmas, and I see quite a few every year.  I guess they get worn out or people just want a bigger/newer/nicer one?  (I don't know I've never had a fake tree)

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • Just the thought of pine is makng my eyes burn. I was never allergic as a kid, but the first year my mom bought a fake tree she realized my brother was. Poor guy. I started having allergy issues in my mid 20s.

This used to be me and I was hardcore about it. Then the dog and cats started drinking the tree water, the cats would try to eat the limbs and actually pulled it down once. Then we had a kid and it was a holy mess (reminder- our house is very small). 3 years ago we went with a fake, pre-lit.

I died a little inside this year when T asked when we were going to get the tree out of the attic, but a real tree just got too stressful for us at one point and now that we have spent the money and purchased the environmental impact of a fake, we feel like we need to keep using it as long as it is still useful- which does not just mean the pre-lit lights aren;t working anymore. We have 2 sections out and strung them with regular lights. Lights not working is no reason for the landfill IMO.

I heard somewhere that using a real tree is actually better for the environment than the carbon footprint that an artificial tree creates in its production.  I think you have to use a fake tree for 20 years or something to make it worthwhile.

@ rayskit - We didn't end up buying a prelit b/c I knew the lights would eventually go out, and we would end up having to string it ourselves, anyway, since we plan to keep our artifical for a LONG, LONG time.  i really hope ours lasts for 20 years b/c I really love ours.  People ask if it's a real tree all the time!

  • i'm the only one with 2 real trees?? i don't know if that's a bad sign or not....

If I weren't allergic to real trees, then we'd have 2 of those.
