all of this.
Agree 1000% with ZAngel. I love the term "nancy age". And also, everything is just way too PC, cry wolf, etc etc.
For PETE'S SAKE, the kid wasn't even talking TO the teacher!!!!!!! And even if we was, seriously? A teacher feeling sexually harassed by a 9-year old calling her cute???? You've got to be kidding me. Ridiculous.
none of this.
freedom of speech is one of the cornerstones of our foundation as a country. it doesn't mean everyone who decides to speak is RIGHT... there are plenty of idiots. when you start deciding who can and who can't, you start infringing up a very slippery slope. adults speaking in public can say LOTS of things that a 9 year old in a school setting cannot say.
it is generally okay for a nine year old to tell someone he/she thinks a teacher is cute. i feel there is MUCH more to this particular story than the information presented, and don't feel that any of us really have enough facts. if all this kid did was simply innocently call a teacher cute, then clearly this is a dumb situation.
i don't feel it's all or none where the "nancification" business is concerned. it isn't really as simple of a topic as ZAngel's statement makes it seem.

Agreed. I really find it hard to believe that the story is as simple as it is being reported.
I'll agree, the media is usually very good at twisting the truth. However, unless they completely lied, then I'm not sure how this situation could be made right in my eyes. Unless the kid actually made an offensive comment to the teacher or touched her in any way, then I'm not sure treating him like a common criminal is the right answer. Another update to the story was released saying the kid said some other bad words about students. http://www.wsoctv.com/news/29927381/detail.html ...Okay, who cares? They are acting like kids. I can't remember how many times I said something bad about another kid, teacher, etc. That's what kids do. If we got caught cussing in the halls or saying something mean to another student, it's possible we got an after school detention but most of the time it was just a warning or a letter home.
Although, I do agree it is never as simple as it should be. Society has made so many different rules for every person -- every gender, race, sexual preference, age, weight, income level, mental ability, and so on. We tip toe at times and then feel it is our right to be blunt towards others (while hiding behind "freedom of speech")... you know, the times when it is okay to do so because you are only offending those that you are allowed to offend at that very moment. Some fear offending others while others have no restraint in offending some. I'm all for protecting our freedoms but I do believe if we are going to have different guidelines for when certain freedoms and rights are allowed (and not allowed) we should focus these rules more on common sense and less on being politically correct.
I'm with you... I do believe every person should have the right to speak (even if I don't agree with what is being said). However, I also believe that this kid should have the same rights and shouldn't be held to a different standard just because they can twist the situation to meet their needs. Honestly, I believe it boils down to the school being angry at the kid... he may very well be a huge pain in their a$$. To me, it looks as if they are fishing for a reason to punish him and I believe they've gone too far. Now, if more details were released showing that he actually did something wrong, I would eat my words.

And... here's where we defer to Bambi's momma! What "should" be said vs. what "can" be said is different for everyone, I guess.
I like that our society has grown to be more accepting/inclusive and more aware of offending others with words. I'm all for kinder/gentler where consideration for our fellow humans is concerned.
I was reading an article yesterday about the first woman who completed in the Boston Marathon, and how the male competitors were trying to physically push her off the road and have her thrown out of the race. Can you imagine?
