We got a Fur Child!

Friends of ours found him last week in a ditch and knew we were wanting to adopt so we had him all checked out and brought him home. He was pretty shy and very skinny, but he's doing really, really well with us. We cannot believe someone just dumped him. The vet thinks he's some kind of lab and about 10-12 weeks old.

  • OMG Look at those ears and little rubber band legs.

The beauty of rescued pets is that you'll spend the next twelve years asking him who in the world would ever dump such a cute, smart puppy.  It's said aloud almost daily at our house.

Sign up for obedience classes now!!  It's so easy to get complacent and not get into classes.  Just get it over with and sign up so you have no excuses.  He's at the perfect age for socialization!

I told M I wanted him to go to obedience classes, but he's so cheap!  It's hard for me to believe someone ditched him because he is already SO smart. He had two accidents the first day we had him, but has had zero since then! He has taken to his crate pretty well and doesn't whine at night. We are waking up  to let him out at night and he goes out to do his business then comes right back in to his crate.

He's not so good with his leash and hates riding in the car but we are confident that with some work, he will be fine with those later.

  • Rudi struggled with motion sickness until he was almost a year old.  I had to lay down layers of towels and he would puke before we were even a block away from my house.  I stopped every ten minutes to pull the top towel out from under him, shake it out, and put it in a bag.  My car smelled terrible for a long time.  Poor dog would salivate and back away from my car every time we had to go to training.

Don't let your husband be cheap on this.  I normally pay between $90-$110 for a six week class.  Training classes help improve a dog's confidence, socialization skills, their ability to listen to commands not just from you, but from other people (great skill to have when you have guests at your house or your dogs go to boarding!), less boredom, which results in fewer chewed shoes, the list goes on and on.

I'm so glad it's going well so far!  I won't lie, every time we've brought a dog home, we've had a couple weeks of, "Oh crap.  What have we done," but it always gets better, otherwise we wouldn't keep doing it.

  • Handsome little guy. I cannot believe anyone would do a thing like that, just makes me want to cry. He's so lucky to have you though! In a way I guess it was just meant to be.

  • He's SO handsome!
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • Aww soo cute!

People who do things like that to pets have a special place waiting for them in hell.

Sounds like you are on the right track being a new pet mama! He is so adorable. I will second the obedience classes, yes they are good chunk of change, but they are seriously worth it. I'd rather spend $200 for 6 short weeks then live a long 12 years with a disobedient dog. Even if he seems super smart and catching on, it's still worth it to make even more pleasant to be around. Plus the socializing with the other dogs in class is so fun to watch, I think I'd pay $200 to see them in action all over again, so cute.

We named our recent rescue pup Cooper too! Good pick!

  • Sooo cute, congrats!  He looks like my dog as a puppy, he is a Lab/Viszla mix.  Labs are seriously the best dogs!  And I do think you need to do some sort of training, our little guy is so hyper, I can't even imagine how out of control he would be if he had not training :-)
