New home & previous residents' mail
We just bought our first home a couple weeks ago. The people who lived there before us were renters and their mail still comes to our address. It wouldn't normally be a big deal, but they get a ton of mail and junk. Is there something we should/could do about this? TIA
Re: New home & previous residents' mail
We have been in our house for 8 years, and STILL get mail for the guy that lived there 2 people before we bought! I know it's junk mail so I usually recycle.
If the envelopes have regular stamps on them, write Return to Sender on them and put them back in the mailbox.
This. My parents still get mail for the people who lived here before us and they have owned the house for 6 years now! We used to write return to sender and stick it in the post box, now we just right moved. Some of the junk mail (flyers for pizza etc) that comes on a regular basis we have actually ended up calling whoever is sending it and telling them that we no longer want the address on thier mailing list, because obviously they didnt unsuscribe and didnt care enough to have it forwarded, so we know will we will forever get it if we dont call them.
At my new place we actually requested in our offer that they put in a formal change of address with the post office, to help this from happening again, but they are nice people and friends with the neighbors so we have come to the agreement that anything that comes for them we will hand over to the neighbor and she can pick it up there.

We put a sign inside our mail box for the mailman to see who are the resident of the house. (This was helpful before we were married and I had his name, and the PO's had different last names.)
The mailman asked us to do this so he would know not to deliver mail that wasn't addressed to us. Worked out well.
Talk to your mail carrier and tell them that 'The Doe Family' doesn't live there anymore. Believe it or not, it makes a huge difference.
You can also put a note on the inside of your mailbox that says 'The Smith Family' only.
Also, send all mail back and mark it 'return to sender'. Eventually, the mail carrier will learn about the change and they will automatically send back the mail. They hand sort it all more than one may think
