SNOW!!!

I have to say that I LOVE my front tree in the snow.  It's gorgeous. :)

Second I have to say that my husband is CRAZY!  He thinks I'm going to need to check for school closings tomorrow.  Seriously?!!  It's an inch to 3 inches.

Tell me when schools typically cancel due to snow?  What's the depth it needs to be to close?  Tell me it's not 3 inches!

He also warned me that the roads 'feel different' when it snows.  Uh, yea? Maybe a bit slippery, perhaps?  I asked what he had to drink with his dinner :)  He explained that apparently around here you don't sand/salt roads much or something?

Re: SNOW!!!

  • It's true that they don't salt as much as they use to, 3 inches they won't cancel.  I'd say 5 or 6 is the minimum before they call off schools.

It's not a bad winter here compared to other parts of the state, esp. the west side, due to lake effect snow.  Many people here complain, but I lived in Kzoo for 6 yrs, they have nothing to complain about!

  • Ok...I'm a little jealous!  We got excited in Texas because a front just came through that dropped the temp to the upper 40s during the day!  Enjoy the snow!

  • Bronco's right.  Usually the snow needs to be at least 5-6 inches before they'll think about canceling school.

I swear when we were kids they'd let it get to be about a foot before canceling. Confused

This!!!  It seems like they cancel for much less snow than they used to!

This was such a beautiful snowfall!  My 1 mile walk in the cold this morning from my car was much more enjoyable with this scenery!

  • Cancelling schools usually depends on how bad it is the night before, if it's still snowing throughout the night, and if they think the salt trucks can get out in the morning.

    3 inches in nothing.

So... what DID he drink with dinner?

  • I was going to say- I've had school cancelled because of too much ice.  I think they base it off of how safe it is for the buses to be transporting children from their homes to school.  If it's not safe enough for the buses to drive, then it probably isn't safe for everyone else.
  • Yeah usually the snow has to come at the right time of the night, like early morning, where they don't have enough time to plow it before the buses leave.

My husband is always warning me about slippery roads! Today was fine though, there wasn't any snow on the roads.  It's true though, in the last few years they have cut the budget for salt and plows a lot, so they don't clear it as much or as fast as they used to. Some cities are worse than others.

I agree completely!   Winters here are nothing like the west side of the state!!!

  • I didn't really think schools would be close FTR. I actually feel pretty naive about the winter here. I keep hearing not much snow so I feel like it's going to be nothing.  I know the average yearly snow fall is an average snow storm for me back home. I'm not worried about how much snow we get here, but I guess we wonder more about how people react to the snow- like my husband last night thinking that maybe they close schools for not much snow or something.

I don't know if I'm expressing it correctly but oh well.
