East coast beaches/rentals?
We are trying to plan a big extended family vacation for summer 2013, and we're thinking of renting a house on a beach on the east coast. Any suggestions or places to avoid? We are from just north of LA so aren't interested in anything on the west coast. We will have young children going (two family members are currently pregnant so around or less than a year old) so plan on mainly hanging out at the beach, BBQing, and relaxing. TIA!

Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.

That's a lot of coastline.
I'll represent for New Jersey - Ocean City, Avalon/Stone Harbor and Long Beach Island are very family-friendly. Ocean City has the classic style wooden beach boardwalk with amusements. LBI has an amusements area but it's not on the beach.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
I would suggest Myrtle Beach -> North Myrtle Beach, Murells Inlet, Pawlley's Island. They're all very family friendly and have a ton to do.
I would not suggest OC Maryland. Dewey and Bethany beaches (in DE) are nicer and much much cleaner/quieter.
i would recommend ocean city, NJ... very family -friendly. Theres a great boardwalk with lots of games, rides, and awesome boardwalk food (pizza, funnel cake, snow cones) its a"dry" town- so theres no liquor stores or bars in town, whcih keeps out a lot of the trashy "Jersey Shore" element :-)
i also LOVE the outer banks in north carolina!! My parnets have a vacation house down there, on Hatteras ISland. Its an awesome place to just hang out and be with the family for a week. For a big group, this might be a better bet- i think it has more of the bigger houses to pick from (seriously- there are some with 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and elevators!!) PAGE me if you have any questions about the OBX... i'm down there a lot :-)
It really depends on what you want. The ocean is so different as you travel north. Ditto to NC. Not sure about NJ. DE has a few decent beaches (Bethany, Rehobeth, Lewes). Being in this area, my vote locally goes to Ocean City, MD (not NJ). It's family friendly with lots to do for all ages.
Outer Banks is really a nice place and the options for house rentals seem endless.
