Where can I get moving boxes... for free?

We're in the process of moving and I'm in search of cardboard moving boxes... any ideas on where to get these for free? I've tried freecycle (don't want to go through the acceptance process) and CL doesn't seem to have anything...  I am willing to drive all over MoCo. Thanks!

Re: Where can I get moving boxes... for free?

  • For one of our moves, we got a lot of good boxes out of the cardboard recycling dumpster at our local Borders. DH didn't ask, he just took them, but you could try calling Barnes & Noble or another bookstore and asking them. They are nice because they are usually a uniform size, especially if they got a large shipment of the same book.
  • Dear Tulep,

I've been through three Freecycle groups (three locations) and the acceptance process has always been very simple and smooth. That said, my top places to get boxes are liquor stores, printing stores (FedexOffice/Kinkos) and Starbucks (specifically the boxes for bagged/retail coffee beans). They are all smaller boxes, but I like that because I am not tempted to put so much in them that they weigh too much. Several of our moves have been made with the same boxes -- solid!

  • Hmmm - I've always done Freecycle, CraigsList, or my local neighborhood listserv. Good luck!
  • Ditto Craigslist. After we moved, we posted our boxes under the free section. Great heavy duty boxes. We just wanted someone to pick them up!

  • Call before you go but when we moved three years ago, you could get free boxes at Uhaul rental locations. They sell new boxes but have free used boxes at many locations. We got a ton of barely used boxes for free, including some really odd sizes. We also got boxes at the local liquor store...the bottle boxes are perfect for books.
  • Awesome!! Thanks for the ideas, everyone
  • You may also want to try your grocery store- banana and apple boxes are amazing for moving!

Work - for all our moves I have always taken the paper boxes from work...they are very sturdy and are great for moving.

  • ditto work - paper boxes are great

liquor stores often have really good boxes too. our movers must have thought we were alcoholics for all the wine boxes we used when we moved here!

  • Banana boxes are awesome packing boxes! You gotta pre-check for any 'ick' left over, but seriously, GREAT packing boxes complete with built-in handles.
  • Just scored some at Hallmark and Radio Shack. I feel like I'm eyeing up any random cardboard box now that I see in a store -- like some sort of weird cardboard obsession. :)
