For those who metro to work...

I haven't metroed to work full time since 2004. I've been applying for fed jobs outside of my agency, so I want to know what to expect.

Huntington to Farragut West was 45 minutes or so (I think, back then). I'm CONSIDERING moving back to VA and will maybe have a ride into Silver Spring or somewhere in the district. It all depends, but I dislike MD unless it is Howard or Anne Arundel Counties. Living where I am now is exhausting.

(1) Do you metro from VA to MD? VA to DC? Is it extra to cross over a state line?

(2) Do the feds still reimburse?

(3) How reliable would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best).

(4) How much is parking now? (I would likely have SO pick me up and drop me off)

(5) Anything you would like to add?

Re: For those who metro to work...

  • (1) Do you metro from VA to MD? VA to DC? Is it extra to cross over a state line?  Currently, there isn't a charge to cross state lines.  You can just ride-guide to figure the exact cost (of course, that depends on what time you go.. peak, peak of peak, off peak and if you use a SmartTrip card)

    (2) Do the feds still reimburse? It varies by agency.  My current agency only does pre-tax deductions from payroll.  It pays nothing.  Previous agency paid 100%.

    (3) How reliable would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best). My line (blue) is pretty reliable-- 7 or 8 maybe.  You couldn't pay me to ride red.

    (4) How much is parking now? (I would likely have SO pick me up and drop me off)  Don't know...WMATA site can tell you.

    (5) Anything you would like to add? It costs me around $8 to metro.  I can park near my office for $8.  Any negative issues could push me into driving at least a few days a week.  (The upcoming change to the blue line to alternate trains to pickup the yellow route over the river will be a pain for me, since I will only be able to take every other train from my house.  And they are talking about a rate hike, which would make it cheaper for me to drive.  Also, consider that the allowances for how much an agency can pay is likely dropping.  Many people may give up on metro at that point.  That could make traffic worse, but the train less crowded.

    (1) Do you metro from VA to MD? VA to DC? Is it extra to cross over a state line? Nope

    (2) Do the feds still reimburse? Yep, I forget what the limit is. $118? But it covers my entire commute.

    (3) How reliable would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best). 9 Metrobus to Metro. Most of the time it works pretty good.

    (4) How much is parking now? No idea(I would likely have SO pick me up and drop me off)

    (5) Anything you would like to add? I love being able to read on the Metro/Metro bus. With my nook, it's way easy to do this even when standing. I never want to have to drive to work.

MD to DC.  My trip is $4.85 (I think?) each way.  Price is calcuted station to station, and based on whether or not you use a Smartcard.

    (2) Do the feds still reimburse?

Yes.  I think my Smartbenefits covers all (or most) of my Metro trip.

    (3) How reliable would you rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best).

7 or 8?  It's usually pretty good, but when it's bad, it's BAD.

    (4) How much is parking now? (I would likely have SO pick me up and drop me off)

$4.75 a day, PLUS $55 a month for a hang tag to park in the reserved section.  The Fed subsidy does NOT cover any parking costs.  Which sucks big time.

    (5) Anything you would like to add?

Given the cost of parking, and the total combined trip cost - if DH and I worked closer to each other (and on the same schedule) I'd seriously consider driving in each day.

  • I Metro from VA to DC on the Orange Line. Fare is based on distance traveled, whether you have a SmartCard, and what time of day you are traveling (peak, peak of the peak, non-peak). My fare from EFC to Smithsonian is $3.50 to get to work.

My agency pays 100% of my Metro fare. I sometimes add money to my card to cover personal travel.

Most days, Metro is really reliable. My door to door commute is usually right around 45 minutes. But then there are the days of single tracking, having to offload due to doors, and other random things which make me want to pull my hair out. But honestly I am so much happier commuting on Metro than driving.

No clue about Metro parking since I live walking distance to a Metro station. Regardless, the fed subsidy isn't allowed for Metro parking anyway.

I love being able to read a book on the Metro (I get so much done) and honestly I don't even notice the 20-25 min I am on the train.
