Non-IN jealousy - big houses
Gosh, I just stumbled across someone's blog from back home and she had all sorts of pictures of her house that's 7.128 times bigger than my apartment (I couldn't resist doing the calculation).
I know we've talked about living spaces before, but am I the only one who gets this way and dreams about the day she can live in a single family home? Or, is it just Spain where people tend to live in apartments and "chalets" (as single family homes are called here) are just for those with serious $$$$, at least in the north.
I've got work to do but I think I'm going to waste some time on real estate porn...
Re: Non-IN jealousy - big houses
I just posted this as a confession over on BNTOB. Sometimes I get jealous when I see people post on FB, pictures of their houses. I live in a shoebox. I would love to sell it and get something bigger but it would be difficult now with the housing market here.
I would love to have a garden and a bigger house but at the end of the day it would just mean more to clean and less money in the bank.
Our house in Saigon was over 200sq metres with over 1000 sq metres garden, I miss that space. Here we are in an apartment that is about 85 sq metres with a small balcony, spacewise it's ok and location is great, but I really want outdoor space for bbqs, so M can run around and for just enjoying the nice weather we get almost year round without having to leave the house.
From what we have seen we can somewhat afford to get a small house with a garden, but location is becoming a problem. We don't want to move too far out of town for M's school and convenience reasons and finding an affordable place isn't easy.
That's what DH says.
Our house is pretty darn big for Dutch/Amsterdam/cities in Europe standards (about 220m2 (just over 2300 sqf I guess.) That is including the garage and hallways and such which count in the calculations here. Still, for here it's big.
What I'm jealous of is all the free standing houses. Mine is a row house. A house this size without others attached would mean at least three times the price of this and impossible to find. I kinda like the size of our yard though, I wouldn't know what to do with a big American sized yard, too much work! (especially since I REALLY don't like grass, and not just the mowing.)

What I'm looking forward to in 2012:
Eating our way through (northern) Italy on vacation
<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DLuxembourg is also insane when it comes to house prices. Lots of people live over the boarder because just stepping over that little line on the map means a HUGE drop in house prices...for what we paid for this house we could live in a small castle in France or Germany (no we're not rich it's just that big of a difference in prices).
Our place now is 180 m2. Ideally we'd like a little more room so we could have more storage and an extra bedroom (at the moment E gets moved into my office when we have people stay over). But by local standards we've got a decent sized house. It's what the brits call semi-detached (we have a house attached but only one).
Our yard is just the right size for us and the pup
I wish I was in your boat. Trust me, your casa could be smaller than that. Just remember how much quality time you get to spend with your DH living in such a small space. You cant escape from each other
I do not want to live in one of those McMansions that have popped up all over the States, because I do not want to clean it, but I wouls just love an open floorplan where it feels like I have more space. We are looking to move into a bigger space eventually.
DH and I have been all over the internet looking at houses here in England, but then my cousin put a link up in FB to see their house that they are trying to sell. It isn't a McMansion, but the comparison was absolutely shocking.
Yup. I love living in an apartment although we are currently looking for something a bit bigger. We have a 1-bedroom (rental) now and we really want a guest room now that we can afford something a bit bigger. No idea how big this flat is but it's perfect for us. I get really stressed out at the idea of looking for / buying anything to own - the responsibility and the decision making is just beyond me right now!
And DH and I can hardly keep on top of the cleaning here, I have no idea how people do it in a house. By the time I go to work, get to the gym and have dinner, I'm exhausted!

I am not a suburb person either, and where we are you can actually get big houses in the city - but I know we would get more for our money further out. It isn't worth it to us!
I live in the burbs. Big time. Small to medium sized houses, ours is 1500sq ft and my best friend down the block is about 1250sq ft. Neighbors are all right on top of each other and we can walk to the elementary school for our neighborhood.
I dream of a 4000+ sq ft house. But I totally agree that the more space you have you just fill it right up. We have been in apartments or tiny two family homes since we had Bruce and the minute we moved in here and had Evelyn it was already too small. We just got more crap to fill it up!
Hahaha - this!
On our list of pros and cons for living in Germany/the US, being able to afford our own house with enough space for everything we'd like in there (home office, room for each of the kids - we'd like 3-4, guest room, etc) is waaaaay at the top of the pros list for the US. Friends of ours just bought a gigantic house for German standards that I saw for the first time on Saturday, and I got major, major house envy. It's about 200qm, I'm guessing, and probably cost them upwards of 700,000 euros. They can afford it. We cannot.
yea we have been struggling with this for ages since we've been house hunting for the past 6 months
eventually we had to give up our dream of living near the beach - because we want space & a yard & just can NOT afford it near the beach
so we are moving to the suburbs next week, with a ginormous mortgage, but I'm looking forward to not tripping over dd all the time as our apartment is tiny. *sigh* I wish the house didn't come with such a giant mortgage though - that's Australia for you
makes me miss US prices
I want to see pictures of your new house!!
ha ha - thanks
I just didn't put a link to it on here cause it makes me nervous to put our address out there on the web - even on fb (the pics are all on a house search website)
hmmm I wonder if I could PIP a few pics..... it need some work - but it has the SPACE we want - which we're really excited about
