This is what happens when you're a country mouse...

I was born and raised in the country. I wouldn't say that I'm hick, but I'm definitely not a city girl. On Friday in an apartment complex about 20 minutes away from where I live (and right next to where my best friend lives) a 7 year old girl went missing. They found her body today in a trash can.

I feel so shocked and upset. This sort of thing never happens around here. The last murder in our town was 15 or so years ago, a young man on drugs broke into his Grandparents house to steal and the death of his Grandparents was accidental. Whoever has done this to that poor girl has attacked our whole community.

Just makes you stop and think...no matter how safe you may feel somewhere, evil can happen anywhere : (

  • I always find it disconcerting to hear news like this from my hometown, which is also quite small. I grew up across the street from a corn field.

I've come to the conclusion that there are no guarantees, only behaviors learned to minimize risk. Sometimes that makes me feel better, and sometimes it makes me feel worse.

    *hugs*

  • Sad

  • This is a horrible story, I was so sad to hear today they found her body.

  • I was closely watching the news, praying that they would find her somewhere all safe and sound.
  • I also grew up in the middle of cornfields (in the summer you could see 4 other houses from mine and in the winter about 8 after the fields were harvested and the corn didn't obscure the view :-)), and have had some problems with city life on the occasions I've lived in bigger cities. I was also sorry to hear that they found the girl's body - I'd been hoping she'd "just" gone missing and would be found.

  • Very sad.  I heard about that and didn't know they had found her body.  I'm kind of used to hearing terrible things on the news.  I'm from the place that the Amber Alert started.

This is a great comment. I grew up in the suburbs but I feel so, so much safer in a city than when we visit DH's family in the middle of nowhere. The countryside makes me so nervous!

So sorry to hear about this story, it's so sad :-(

FI doesn't understand why I feel so shocked and upset. I mean, I hear these terrible things on the news all the time but they're not places I've gone. I used to visit a friend in that very same apartment complex when I was little. I've played soccer in the field where they looked through the dumpster they found her in. The movie theater they used as a base of operations is the one I prefer to go to. FI is from London and hears about terrible things like that happening just down the road all the time. He thinks it's sad, but wasn't so blown away by it as I was.

  • That is so sad. I didn't read the article, but do they have any idea who did this?

My heart goes out to your community.

  • It's still shocking and upsetting to me.  Hopefully it didn't come off that it wasn't.  Dallas area news just seems to be filled with horrible things happening constantly.  That was one good thing about moving to Arkansas. :)
