We're thinking about going back next summer to drive around the island.

I can't wait to hear about your trip next year. I'm *dying* to go to Russia too.

    Yes

  • Married, traveling, unemployed  :)

The best things I did this year were get married (obviously), quit my job (not always obvious but the change in happiness has been significant), and any time I go anywhere I'm happy - with Costa Rica, Iceland, France, and Tahiti under my belt, plus Hawaii, I consider it a good travel year.

Since this was before I was Nesting, where in Africa did you go?  H and I are trying to figure out a good time to go to Tanzania in 2012.... if you went there I will be picking your brain for sure!

(got a FT job in my field, paid off debt, bought a great house at a great price, got knocked-up)

Seriously 2011 has been amazing. I knew it from Day 1 of this year. 2010 was terrible for me. So depressing.

this is awesome. yay for an awesome year for you!

January as well!  We were there from 1/1 to 1/15.  We went to Monteverde, Arenal, and Manuel Antonio.  We almost didn't come home, we loved it so much.

We seem to have a lot in common!  Where are your 2012 destinations (goals)?  We're still trying to figure ours out... H just told his boss yesterday that he wants a six-month sabbatical in 2012 so that we can travel a bit... so now I am going crazy trying to figure out where and when.  :)

That would have been crazy if crossed paths at some point because I was there from 12/28-1/11. We went to Manuel Antonio, Arenal, and Tamarindo.

We're trying to buy our forever house next year, so we're keeping travel a little light. We'll probably do 2 weeks in New Zealand, 7-10 days in Europe somewhere (hopefully Turkey or something like that, but not for the Olympics) and then 2-3 long weekends domestically. I haven't told H yet, but I'm considering cashing in my miles and spending a week in London visiting my cousin too.

H's is up for his sabbatical next year, so I think I'm going to be in your boat next year, but I doubt I can take anything longer than a month with my job. Crying

I loved Turkey when I went there in 2009!  We only went to Istanbul but it's on my list of places to go back to (I really want to do Cappadocia).  If you haven't yet been to Greece, I suggest doing Turkey and then jetting out to Santorini / Mykonos for a few days after - we did that and we flew the entire way (via Turkish / Olympic Airways) and it was so easy and convenient.

I've been putting off looking for a new job since H doesn't seem to care that I'm not working and since I knew he was considering a sabbatical in 2012.  I think he'll actually probably take most of 2013 off since we're trying to do an around-the-world trip before we settle down and have kids... but that will all depend on finances and a few things working out for us (he's at a tech start-up so you never know what will happen there).

I'm now at over one million air miles on my Alaska account so I need to start burning some of those off - I get scared when they accrue too many because they can change their policies / point system on a whim and make those miles a lot less valuable, so I'm just waiting to figure out when H is not working and I'm going to start booking random trips.  We're already slated for the Dominican Republic in January (for a friend's birthday) and Hawaii in March, but I'm hoping to get Peru / Galapagos Islands in sometime in the late spring, Spain and Portugal in June, and Bali in August for our anniversary (though H doesn't seem to want to go to Bali so we'll see what we come up with).  We will see if I pull any of these off...

Where did you stay in Arenal?  And when were you there?  That seems like the most likely place for us to have crossed paths.  :)  We were at the Arenal Nayara.

I really need to get south of the equator. I was putting pins in our map last night and we don't have *anything* south of the equator.

We were in Arenal for only a few days, somewhere in the middle of the trip. The volcano never appeared for us. Did you see it?  We stayed at Hotel Magic Mountain.

Have you been to Portugal and Spain before? I have a ton of recs for both places. I love, love, love Portugal. I didn't want to come home from there. I look at apartment there from time to time. I'm totally retiring to Lisbon.

For south of the equator, I HIGHLY recommend Argentina - everything you could want there!  We went for 2 weeks in 2009 and H was initially like, "Why the eff are you dragging me to Argentina?" and then by the time we were done he was like, "Why the eff are you making me go home?"  Just an incredible country - people were great, food is amazing (hope you like steak), and the landscape and things to do are so varied!  You can go wine tasting, white water rafting, skiing, glacier hiking, go to see Iguazu Falls, go down to Tierra del Fuego... and it's all relatively cheap because Argentina's economy collapsed (i.e. it's the exact opposite of Iceland's "economy collapsing" because it actually is cheap).

As for Spain / Portugal - haven't been there yet but I'm toying with just going to Portugal in April (I have a Portugese friend from my MBA program who lives in Lisbon) and then doing Spain for 2-3 weeks in June.  I will definitely ask for advice - H is more interested in Spain than Croatia (which was what I was advocating for) so I think he's going to win out... unless I can convince him to do six weeks abroad during his sabbatical and start in Spain and then work our way over through France, northern Italy, etc., to Croatia... which seems VERY unlikely.  H gets cranky if we're gone more than 2 weeks - I managed to marry the only successful, very-well-educated man I've ever met who doesn't seem to have any interest in traveling.  His idea of an "around the world" trip is couch surfing with all his high school friends on the East Coast.  :(
