*Kimberly* Africa

We didn't go to Tanzania. We were in South Africa for two weeks and spent most of our time in Cape Town, Soweto and nature preserves north of Johannesburg.

Re: *Kimberly* Africa

  • Still sounds incredible!  I wanted to go to SA for the World Cup 2010, but that was just too logistically challenging with the new job I'd started.  I definitely want to go to SA, but friends have suggested a guided tour there since there can be pockets that are very unsafe.  Did you do a guided tour?  And did you feel safe the entire time?  My friends who went to WC said they felt safe around police and in the big cities, but there were other areas they were definitely sketched out to visit.
  • We did go as part of an organized tour. We had done some research prior and found that there really isn't any public transportation and that the onsite tours in many cities are big scams.

I felt safe 100% of the time. DH and I went out several nights by ourselves for dinner, drinks, and do other activities that weren't included in the tour and we were fine. Only once did our tour guide insist that we take a cab to dinner because we had to pass through a questionable area and our dinner reservations weren't until after dark.

We also didn't spend any time in Jburg, basically flew and and out of there. Apparently for S.Africa that is one of the worst tourist places.

We actually went to several concerts on the grounds that they developed for WC and it was great. Though you see this magnificent arena and it sticks out like a sore thumb.
