Weight-loss help

Hey ladies - I know I've been MIA - illness, classes, and Drama Club - but I need a swift kick in the rear and some advice/help.

So we've all been down this path before - weight loss.  And keeping it off.  I haven't kept off the weight I lost for the wedding and I'm not thrilled with myself.  But I'm not sure how to solve the problem anymore.  Here's my deal:

I leave for school at 6:50am.  Two nights a week, I don't get home until 8:30/9pm. Mondays I get home around 7:30, and I'm home around 6ish the other nights.  Because of Drama club, I am wiped when I get home.  Working out just doesn't happen.  This schedule just leaves me exhausted - on the weekends, I end up sleeping until about 10 or 11, which then limits the time I have to get stuff done.  I know that I have to MAKE the time on the weekends, and now that I'm done with classes and am healthy again, I plan to do so.  But I'm stuck during the week.

I also struggle with the fact that I don't like healthy food.  I hate fish.  And I get tired of eating health food all the time that I've given up. This is going to sound awful but I really do prefer the taste of the stuff that we know is bad for us.  So I get frustrated with myself because while we do try to eat healthy, both DH and I are getting sick of the healthier food and we want to eat the tastier things, like pasta and potatoes and red meat, again.

I need help.  I don't know how to get back on the weight loss bandwagon with this schedule but it's not going to change until April.  And I don't know how to deal with my food issues.  Any ideas?

You made my wedding day complete.

Re: Weight-loss help

  • Welcome back! I hope that, even though you're busy, you're loving it! How's the new house?

I totally understand with the getting stuck in a rut when it comes to food and cooking dinner. One thing that has really helped me in terms of eating healthy is branching out in my cooking. There are SO many healthy meals out there; you just need to find what you like. It's not all fish, veggies, and salads. I spend some time on the weekends browsing Pinterest and various food blogs looking for new meals to try, and then I really look forward to making them. And remember that you don't have to cut out pasta and potatoes - just don't base your meals around them.

Are you getting enough sleep? With a schedule like yours, it's easy to cut back on sleeping, but if you're not getting sufficient (quality) sleep, it'll prevent you from losing weight.

For me, I find that it helps to pack small snacks to eat throughout the day. If I don't eat between lunch and dinner, as soon as I get home, I'm starving and I grab whatever is close and eat it.

Don't give up on yourself and don't beat yourself up about it.

  • First off I want to say that you should be proud of yourself for wanting to make the change! I've been learning a lot about health and fitness lately from this boot camp I signed up for so I'm going to share with you the things I've learned!

As far as nutrition goes, it's all about portion control. You can eat pastas, breads, cookies etc. but you have to pay attention to how much you are eating. I bought a food scale to be a little more conscious as to what a serving is and I was amazed at the difference in what I thought a serving was to what it really is (especially in things like cereal, which I love lol). I would suggest writing your food intake down for a a few days to a week. Really look at what you're eating, how much you're eating. This will help you understand the changes you need to make.

I also think planning meals ahead will help you as well. There are a lot of tasty, healthy food options out there and if you have an idea of what you are going to make for lunch/dinner you're more likely to stay on track and not grab for the frozen pizzas (which I am guilty of doing myself on some occasions) :)

With your schedule, I can see why you are so exhausted by the time you get home. I'm not sure I'd want to work out either at night with a schedule like that! I think you already said the biggest thing, you have to MAKE the time, tired or not and I think once you start doing it, it will become easier. The one thing I did was sign up for bootcamp. You pay fully in advance for 4-6 week sessions. This way I feel obligated to go because I don't want to waste my money.

Also, another thing you could do is shorter workouts on those nights. You don't have to workout for an hour to get in a good workout, you just have to put the right stuff in your workout to make it a success if it's only 20-30 minutes.

I have a lot of good work out ideas if you'd like. I also signed up last year for a clean eating plan and still have the menu. If you'd like I'd be happy to send that along as well. This will at least give you an idea of what options are out there for snacks and meals. Let me know and I can email you!

  • welcome back!  I can see why you are frustrated with a busy schedule like that it would be really hard.  How is the house coming along?

Have you thought about weight watchers?  I have a friend who is on that right now and she has had great results.  I know you probably don't have time for the meetings but they have an online program also.

One thing that I've learned is that you shouldn't cut out all the yummy foods.  If you do you will just get frustrated and quit.  Like someone else said, it's all about moderation and portion control.  Also another thing that I've noticed for myself is that I should never get too hungry.  If you start to feel a little hungry, try having a healthy snack-grapes or almonds or yogurt or whatever you like.  If you get too hungry than you are just going to reach for unhealthy foods and likely over-eat.  And as for exercising just try to start small.  Even if it's a ten minute walk or doing 5 lb. free weights in your living room while you watch tv, it's better than nothing.

I'm going to be trying to lose weight here soon as well, I've gained 42 lbs. this pregnancy so will have about 30 or so to lose once I have the baby.  I'm going to try just eating as healthy as possible and doing light exercise and see how it goes.

  • Welcome back.  I too struggle with weight loss. I also recommend weight watchers.  A few years ago when I was interested in losing weight, my OB recommended it for weight loss.  I did it before the wedding. If you follow the program you can lose weight.  Exercise helps but if you only have time to exercise on the weekends, then you can still lose weight with WW.  They have a points plus program that you can follow.  It makes it easy to track and allows you flexibility in what you eat. You also get anytime points to eat some extra snacks or desserts.

I am also wiped when I get home from work so I understand that.  I need to start getting myself to the Y.  Maybe a quick walk would help once or twice a week.  One year, several friends-co-workers walked on our lunch hour (when we got an hour) and that was great. I only have a half hour for lunch now and never seem to get the whole time so no time for walking!

  • I don't technically eat healthy...I count calories, fat, saturated fat, and carbs. It takes dedication, but it produces results. AND you get the added satisfaction of being able to eat unhealthy food with less to no guilt!

Also, check out chef/cookbook author Rocco Dispirito. He has two cookbooks out where he reworks unhealthy dishes with unconventional ingredients to REALLY cut down the calories and fat.
