Re: QOTD: pre-holiday edition

  • what are your holiday plans? at home this year for the first time, we're hosting since my parents and sister are coming from FL and TX to stay

what's for dinner? Curried potatoes and chickpeas

edit: I missed the holiday aspect of this question. Xmas dinner is Thanksgiving part two, turkey and all of the yummy sides

favorite holiday tradition? Christmas eve sitting by the Christmas tree, we're still figuring out our own traditions

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I would love a ski vacation. I just want some beautiful snow for the holidays and to spend Christmas skiing.

  • what are your holiday plans?  Going to Cleveland 12/23 to 12/24, then St. Louis 12/24 to 12/31.

what's for dinner?  Honeybaked turkey breast and Thanksgiving like fixings.

favorite holiday tradition? Waking up extra early to do Christmas presents and eat cinnamon rolls with my mom, step-mom and sister (and H).

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I wouldn't do anything else.  H wants to spend Christmas with his parents every year which involves take out Chili's and watching basketball all day.

  • what are your holiday plans?  christmas with my fam in MA. we usually go to the movies after dinner so depending what is out then, we'll do that too.

what's for dinner? i'd really like to do this prime rib again. made it last christmas, it was so awesome and very easy. my aunt's mashed potatoes, and cakes/pies from a place i love in RI. not sure what else because the original to outsource most of dinner to save us and my mom a ton of work was bagged >:I i am trying to be more zen about the lack of help/contributions from the rest of my family (who, btw, all live in MA and won't be spending 7 hours on a train on 12/22), we'll see if it works . . .

favorite holiday tradition? this is a newer one but i love having some kind of sparkly cocktail and something freshly baked (muffins, coffee cake) with my grandma on christmas morning. we always used to have asti spumante at christmas so it's based on that tradition. asti is way too sweet for me now but as a teenager, i loved being allowed a small glass. this year, it will be cava with cinnamon bitters and vanilla sugar. i've done hibiscus flowers and blood orange mimosas in past years.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? i would actually love for my mom & gram to come to DC. we'd do the same cava & baked goods in the morning, then my bff, her husband, and my niece would join us for dinner. they've known her since we were kids and i know they'd love to meet her daughter. we'd mostly eat, drink, and watch christmas movies.

  • what are your holiday plans? We're staying home for Christmas and hosting dinner for the ILs and my aunt and uncle.

what's for dinner?  The current plan is honeybaked ham (my favorite), gratin potatoes, green beans, rolls, and mini cheesecakes for dessert. DH will probably go overboard and make a zillion other things and we'll end up with way too much food.

favorite holiday tradition? I like driving around on Christmas Eve and seeing all the houses decorated with lights.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I'm very happy with our plan to celebrate at home, but I wouldn't object to spending Christmas in hawaii one year.

  • I feel like I've shared a lot of this in different posts over the past month, so pardon the redundancy.

what are your holiday plans?  We are hosting Christmas Eve dinner with the in laws and the Christmas day we go to my dad's.

what's for dinner? Dinner at our house will probably be a white lasagna with prosciutto and artichoke hearts. Christmas day is usually shrimp omelets  and cranberry sticky buns in the morning followed by prime rib in the afternoon.

favorite holiday tradition? Definitely Christmas day at my dad's. Years ago we resolved never to get out of our pajamas, so we go there and drink mimosas and eat giant omelets and lounge around for the better part of the day.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? Honestly, I can't think of anything. We have it pretty good.

  • spending with my family

tbd, but i put the hint in for ham & scalloped potatoes

the anticipation of xmas morning. i rarely buy things for myself so having presents is really fun for me.  plus, we always make homemade hash browns with are so labor intensive but so worth it.

i wish i could just pay someone to decorate the inside/outside of our house (for free!!!) and then later come by & take everything down (and away...i don't have room to store all that crap). i like homes that are decorated but i don't really have the inclination to do it myself.  or the money to pay someone!!

what are your holiday plans? DH and I are driving back to WI to be with our family (we both grew up there).

what's for dinner?  My FIL is making mushroom and beef strognoff and at my parents we're having ham, pork tenderloin, salad, fuit, veggies etc.

favorite holiday tradition?   Since we've been married we've done an ornament exchange that my MIL started but my FIL isn't going to continue since my mil just passed away... we're all dreading this holiday because of it.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I can't think of anything, I enjoy going back and taking a week off of work even though both families stress me out.
  • what are your holiday plans?  they're up in the air right now.  The ILs might be coming, depends on how MIL feels after her chemo that Friday.  If they don't come, it'll just be me and DH, wasted off our asses Stick out tongue

what's for dinner?  If the ILs come, Christmas Eve will be Fettuccine with bolognese, salad and garlic bread; Christmas Day will be beef tenderloin, roasted broccoli, mashed potatoes and maybe a spice cake.

If they don't come Christmas eve will be chinese food. Christmas day will still likely be beef tenderloin (although, maybe steaks) roasted broccoli and mashed potatoes

favorite holiday tradition?  watching White Christmas.  I love that movie.  Also, mimosas.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?  I would like to have holiday plans set in stone preferably at least 1 week in advance :)
  • what are your holiday plans? I believe we'll be doing the same thing we've done the past two years, which is:

Christmas Eve: not sure yet, possibly dinner with my dad's family

Christmas: morning, we'll be at home just the three of us; in the afternoon, we'll open gifts with my family and probably have dinner with my mom's extended family

Day after Christmas: we'll go to Ohio to see the ILs, open gifts there, and come back on the 28th (which sucks because it's my birthday)

what's for dinner? not sure yet--last year we had lasagna. We don't really have a "traditional" dinner although if we do Chrismas Eve at my dad's there will probably be a ham. Definitely a ham and biscuits at the ILs.

favorite holiday tradition? Watching "It's a Wonderful Life," decorating, listening to Christmas music, eating too much, opening presents with the family (especially now with DS)

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I would love to just stay at home. Open presents in the morning, maybe see my family later in the day. Going to OH is a pain. If we had a bigger place, they could come stay with us, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

  • what are your holiday plans?   I'm heading up to CT to spend Christmas with my family.   Our current assumption is that DH will be traveling for work, but we likely won't know until a couple of days before Christmas.  My sister and her family come in from Chicago and we just enjoy long days of hanging out with family drinking wine, stuffing our faces...
what's for dinner?  My mom always makes a delicious tenderloin and all the fixins.  For dessert she makes a million things but her Bouche de Noel (sp?) is my absolute favorite.
favorite holiday tradition?  My sister and I sneak bacardi in our OJ on Christmas morning.  It started well before we were of age, and is just something silly that we've been doing ever since.
if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?  If $$ wasn't an issue, I'd love for the whole family to spend the holidays on a beach somewhere.  It is really the only time that we are all toghther (my two brother's families are in attendance as well) and I think it would be awesome in nobody (esp. my poor mom!) would have to work so hard, and we could all just enjoy being together.
  •
what are your holiday plans? We'll be going to my parents' house in WNY on Christmas Day.

what's for dinner? I have no idea-we'll probably have the fancy dinner on another day since we'll be getting there kind of late on Christmas.

favorite holiday tradition? I like driving around to look at lights, and going to the candlelight service on Christmas Eve.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I would stay here and have people come to us.  Same for Thanksgiving.  I'm just so tired of traveling to visit other people every time we have some time off.

    what are your holiday plans?
In TX with DH's family. No real complaints as it's only a long weekend and I actually get along with them pretty well.
    what's for dinner?
Not the first blessed clue. If DH remembered to get a head of lettuce maybe a black bean salad of some sort? Realistically we're probably looking at another dinner of cinnamon graham crackers & peanutbutter, cucumbers, and fat-free coolwhip.
    favorite holiday tradition?
Actually its our first 'thing' of the season. The friday after Thanskgiving we get a tree and spend the day watching football, stringing popcorn and cranberries, decorating the tree and reminicing about all our ornaments (what we collect when we travel)
if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?
BUMMER ALERT! - I'd be here with my mom. She's going in for her second round of chemo just a day or two before we leave and I'd love to be able to be near her this year.

  • what are your holiday plans?
Staying home with the kids.  MIL and SIL are coming Christmas Eve day so I need to plan dinner for 5 adults.  Then wake up Christmas morning with the kids - so excited about that since Maggie is getting a bike and she is going to be so happy when she sees it.  Then another BIL/SIL/nephew come Christmas Day so I making a big dinner that day

We see my family 2 weeks later when we go to my dad's in DE for the day.  At least I won't have to cook and clean.

    what's for dinner?
I am struggling so much with this.  I usually have a plan in place by now but MIL can't do any dairy or shellfish or high sodium (ham) which nixed my plans of shrimp scampi for Christmas Eve and Ham for Christmas Day.  I really want to go simple because it seem WE always host everyone and this year two others in the family have houses but again everyone kind of invited themselves to my house.  I know I should be flattered that they love my hosting but I am tired.  Sorry that turned into a vent instead of yummy things to eat.

    favorite holiday tradition?
Gosh I just love it all.  My mom made the whole season so special for us and I love doing that with the kids.  Pre-christmas my fave will be taking the kids to see the Seneca Creek Park Winter Lights.  For Christmas I love baking with the girls because my mom and grandma did that with me and the kids really love helping out with that as much as possible.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?
If I could add a cleaning lady and catering it would make my holidays a lot less stressful. DH's family (5 adults, 1 kid) just comes for 3-5 days and feeding them and cleaning up takes up most of our time.

  • what are your holiday plans?
FIL is coming for a week, Mom is staying over Christmas Eve and we are doing Christmas Day at our house (sister and my FBIL are coming too). We have all sorts of things planned for the week FIL is here: ICE, National Christmas Tree, Botanical Gardens, shopping (he does not want to fly with any gifts so he is doing all his shopping here), Capitol Tour, Pentagon Tour, trip to Annapolis and Mount Vernon. Whew, I am already exhausted.

    what's for dinner?
Christmas Eve we are doing enchiladas. We seem to have started an enchilada tradition in the last few years. Christmas Day, I was planning on putting TJ meatballs with marinara in the crockpot and having a make your own meatball sub menu. plus, appetizers and sweets.

    favorite holiday tradition?
We use to always go to the movies on Christmas Day but now with DD we seem to have switched to watching movies at home. Elf and Love Actually seem to have played for a few years. Also, I love to drive around and look at all the lights. With FIL coming- it is really making us do all the local stuff which is fun.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?
I would prefer that we only spent money on DD and instead went to the Caribbean or something :-)

  • We stay around here for the holidays

We have the turkey dinner all over again

I like Christmas Eve the best!  We have a dinner and open presents

I'd host Christmas Eve at my house instead :) because I like cooking

  • what are your holiday plans? Not totally sure yet... we'll either go to PA to see our families, or we'll stay here and my parents will come.

what's for dinner? Ham, lasagna, green beans, rolls, olive tray... we have the same thing every year.

favorite holiday tradition? At some point during the Christmas season DH and I watch Polar Express while drinking hot chocolate.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why? I wish I could see my good friends from PA. I like staying here better than traveling, but I wish everyone could come, and not just my parents.

  • what are your holiday plans?  Headed to Buffalo for xmas with the ILs, then to the Finger Lakes region to be with my family for a bit.

what's for dinner?  honey mustard pork tenderloin, couscous, and broccoli

HA, I thought it meant tonight too.  So, at the ILs xmas dinner is a beautiful beef tenderloin that gets overcooked and makes me want to cry.

favorite holiday tradition? Christmas Eve tequila shot with my grandma

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?  Not sure, maybe just go away somewhere.

  • what are your holiday plans?
Not sure yet. We're definitely staying here, it's just up in the air whether we'll be home by ourselves, invite some friends over who also don't have family in the area, or our friends we had over for Thanksgiving mentioned maybe Christmas at their place so we'll see.

    what's for dinner?
Also no idea. It sort of depends on what we end up doing. I like to do some version of a turkey dinner.

    favorite holiday tradition?
Just celebrating in general. Some of our traditions got messed up this year with other things going on, so I guess the thing I'm most looking forward to is baking cookies and exchanging ornaments with DH on Christmas.

if you could do something else for the holidays, what would it be? why?
I wish we had the time & money to come back east. It was so nice to be with family the past two years while we were living out there. Someday, I'd love to do a European trip for Christmas and see all the Christmas markets and decorations and things.
  • Holiday plans: Staying here. DHs parents were supposed to come, but plans have since changed and now my folks and my brother and his wife are coming. I am excited. Dinner: last year we did beef tenderloin, but my SIL does not eat red meat. I think I will make short ribs for Christmas Eve when only my parents are here and will either do Turkey or a butternut squash lasagna for Christmas dinner. Tradition : growing up it was evening mass, a tour of local lights and then staying up with my mom to wrap gifts and watch Its a Wonderful Life and mass at St. Pats. With two little ones we are trying to make new traditions, although what will stick in ten years is anyone's guess. Holiday Alternatives: I don't know, I love being home with family. To me that's the best of the best part.
