We are meeting with the trim carpenter this week on our new house. If you were building a house, what would you specifically ask for? I've got quite a list, but I feel like so many other cool things can be done that just haven't crossed my mind.
Re: Ideas please!
Get on www.houzz.com - there are tons of pictures that will give you 1,000 good ideas. Keep in mind though....it is the little things that really become budget busters.
What items are already on your list? And what is a trim carpenter? Is this the guy that will do all of your cabinets?
I've been on houzz for hours and hours at a time. It has helped so much, but I'm afraid if I look at one more picture my head will explode. The trim carpenter will do all the woodwork including the cabinetry.
My list so far: Framed windows in the living room, pull-out corbels on each side of the vent hood for spice racks, roll out drawers in pantry, large roll out drawer under the island for pots and pans with some sort of lid holder, vertical slats for cookie sheets, mudbench and floor to ceiling storage in laundry room. I've also picked out my mantel, window sills, built-in desk in the study, and kitchen cabinet style.
I think I mainly need help with the little things like Wendy's suggestion of air inlet coverings. I also can't decide what to do with the mirror in the master bathroom. I'm going to have a make-up vanity in the middle so I feel like I'll be too short to see the mirror when I sit down. Three seperate mirrors with each one framed out? One large mirror that is deeper in the middle and just frame the top and sides?
My MIL has an island in her new house and she had an oulet put on one side of it. it is great for when we have big family functions at her house as we use the island to sit on the food one and when you bring a crock pot it can be plugged right in and sat with all the other food. She also had lights installed under all of her cabinets.
Yikes this is hard!
Where do you plan on having your TV? If you're hanging it on the wall somewhere, make sure both electrical and cable outlets are behind it.
Look closely at your kitchens and bathrooms to make sure you have enough outlets in places you will likely use them.
Personally, I would also ask for extra shelving in the master closet, extra storage space for linens, etc.
I would also think about a way to hide your cable box, DVD player, etc. We had to get creative with ours and run cords through our hollow mantel to a bookshelf attached on the side of it (where we put our BluRay, etc.). It's always so pretty when those things are out of sight. In our next house, I will definitely plan for this and figure out a way to hide them even more.

This is easy. Place the cable box and other stuff in your coat closet. Run a radio frequency wire from behind the TV, through the attic, and to the coat closet. You have to have a special t.v. control to make it all work but it is super easy to hook up.
LOL, we tried this and the stupid thing didn't work in our house for some reason!! I was so mad.
