so apparently my body decided that a broken foot wasn't enough..
got back from the ER around 2am last night. turns out I have a blood clot in my entire calf muscle
. apparently it's likely from the immobolization of the broken foot. they had to take off the cast, and I'm now in a lot of pain in both the foot AND the freakin calf.
luckily it didn't break off and go into my lungs, and I'm now on medication I have to inject myself with to help keep it from growing/prevent it from breaking off. ugh. anyone have a history of dealing with these?

OMG. I'm so sorry! You're so lucky that didn't travel though! That would have been even worse.
I don't have any advice, but GL. I hope your H is taking extra good care of you.

Ohmygoodness! I am sooo glad they caught that before it became really dangerous - I had a friend of a friend who had a blood clot that she got after knee surgery and traveled to her lungs and she collapsed and was rushed to the ER and literally seconds away from death. So - be soooo glad that they found this before it became a bigger issue. The friend of a friend spent almost a year recovering from it.
As a PSA to all you lovely ladies (+Niq), and since I learned a lot from my friend's friend, blood clots (often known as Deep Vein Thrombosis) are most likely to form when one has invasive surgery (usually on the lower appendages) or from long plane rides (usually 6+ hours, also can happen in bus rides, car rides, etc.), but they can also form from being too sedentary in any environment. On plane rides you're supposed to get up and walk around at least once per hour, drink lots of fluids, and do the foot / leg exercises they recommend (toe circles, stretching, etc.). If you travel frequently, compression socks are a good idea as well. And if you're on birth control, you should be extra careful about this since some forms of birth control increase your risk of blood clots. Smoking is also a really bad idea.
If you tend to sit at your desk for long periods of time, the same thing can happen (since the blood pools in your lower extremities). You should try to get up and walk around every 20-30 minutes if possible. There have been lots of articles written about how sitting down at work actually reduces your life expectancy, so to the extent that you can minimize being sedentary for long periods of time, do so.
Emy - get 110% better, and soon! And everyone else, be careful when traveling or sitting for really long periods of time.
Update: it looks like it was likely caused by the fatal combination of my fracture, immobilization of the leg, and a non stop plane ride to/from NYC while immobilized.
Kimberly, lots of awesome info there.
I'm still in pretty crazy amounts of pain, but my doc gave me meds to get through it. I'm also super nervous about having to give myself the injection tonight, hopefully that goes ok.
yikes Em! glad they caught it but sorry you're having to go through this. that sucks.
Now that the cast is off - what's prognosis for your leg/foot?
This is the only plus side of all of this, it looks like the residual pain was being caused by the clot. They did X-rays today and found that my foot is actually healing well. I'm still in the boot but moving back to weight bearing too which is awesome.
DH got two blood clots in his calf after his knee surgery last month...and that was despite using the CPM Machine and doing exercises every day! He had to inject himself with Lovenox for a couple weeks, and he'll be on Warfarin (blood thinners, I believe) for 3 months.
Once he started using the injectibles, the swelling went down and the pain went away pretty quickly. I hope that same goes for you!
