how presentable is your house? clicky poll

Lately I feel like I've been a slave to my house...especially on the days I work, as DH is left here to mess up the house with LO...and because our dishwasher has been broken. Pregnancy is just too tiring lately.

Just curious, how presentable is your house?

  • only because DH does all the housework.  If it was me, it would be hopeless.

  • DH and I recently started a system to actually get the dishes done nightly. So much better.

before company came I would have to straighten and wipe down the counter, clean off the DR table and clean the bathrooms.

if I wanted to impress and not be embarrassed by sloth I would have to spend about a day cleaning the den. Stacks of books, magazines, and papers to be filed are everywhere. like seven 1-2 foot high piles. that keep growing.

edit: oh, I should probably clean the kitchen trash area too. I tend to pretend that nothing falls between the can and the wall.

  • As long as company wasn't staying for too long and was there for a purpose so I could focus on a few key areas, I could get it good in a few hours. We've actually gotten a lot better since having James since we have to manage our time better, so things stay overall cleaner/straighter than before.

If we've got people sleeping over in addition to eating and hanging out with us, that requires a full day of energy- every room has at least a few things that need serious attention before being presentable! I can't be bothered spending all my precious free time mopping and dusting and putting crap away when I've got something else very precious that is growing like a weed and I don't want to miss it!

  • As far as cleanliness/clutter goes we're actually not too bad right now only because I've been a lunatic about cleaning up and organizing before the baby gets here because I know we will have visitors. Two weeks ago at this time I would have been mortified to have company over! Granted most of the clutter that was upstairs is in now in the basement, LOL...and I would die of embarrassment if anyone went into our shed or basement, but at least the living areas of our house look decent.

I know you're talking about cleanliness but as far as my actual house goes, I really feel like we have so much work to do before I feel really proud to have people over. In the meantime I'm always telling people that it's a "Work in progress" which it is. For example Landscaping leaves much to be desired, we have a shed that's partially unfinished, our living room furniture needs replacing, we have yet to really decorate most of the house, and our guest bathroom is in need of updating..just to list few things.

  • Ours needs someone from the show hoarders to come purge everything for me... Okay a bit of an exaggeration but honestly I'm so overwhelmed I don't know where to begin.

  • While my house is currently in a few minute clean up state (because I just did some major cleaning this weekend) I voted few hour clean up because that is usually how it is. I've been trying extra hard lately not to drop mail on the dining room table, or leave things in the living room closet because I want to get it organized to start putting baby things in. Overall my husband is a drop and go guy when it comes to the laundry room/mudroom and I try to make it a little more organized when company comes because those are the first rooms you walk into at our house.

  • Mine has always been cluttered.

Since people started finding out we were having DS, we constantly inherited stuff.  (I'm grateful, don't get me wrong).  It's almost a total loss now - car seats and high chairs in the hallway, toys crammed in the corner, blankets and bibs scattered throughout the house, heaping laundry baskets everywhere.  I just can't get ahead of it.

DS demands so much of my attention, and I intend to give it to him.  I try to keep it *clean* even if it's not presentable.  It is embarrassing, though.  I wish I could live simplistically...  but, I'm too sentimental.

  • You'd think a SAHM would have all the time in the world to keep a clean house, right? Ha! Being a SAHM means that my house gets trashed 24/7, instead of my child trashing someone else's place (daycare, babysitter, etc.). I try to get DD to pick things up but it's only somewhat effective at her age. I'm also not helped by the fact that both DH and I are naturally a bit cluttered. Adding a kid to the mix has made it 1000x worse.

  • About a month ago I started a 20 min a day cleaning schedule I found on Pinterest, it's the first time I've come close to having a clean house ever! Though the weekends I work and DH is alone here it does get rather trashed, those Mondays are recovery days. Before we cleaned maybe once a month and at that point I was always disgusted and unhappy with the place. I'm sure we'll be back to that in April :P

  • It depends on the day. I usually clean one mess only to make another mess. I cleaned the kitchen all up nice on Sunday morning and then Abe and I make cookies and did arts and crafts and now it is a mess again.

The thing I struggle with is the floors. I feel like I could sweep and mop every day and they would still be yucky. Obviously I don't have that time anymore so I sweep and mop once a week.

Oh, and the play area is a disaster...which it should be.

  • Totally agree with Kimberly. House gets trashed 24/7, but I keep at it all day. Feel like all I ever do is clean and tidy, but I just can't leave stuff laying around. I'm compulsive. Every time DD goes down for a nap now we tidy up all the toys. DH and I are both pretty good with tidying throughout the day. .Dishes are always down right after dinner and once DD goes down to sleep anything else is finished. If company was coming over, I'd need a quick heads up to wipe counters, bathroom vanity, and would love to do a quick sweep since when the sun is shining you can see the dog hair on the wood floor lol My house is due for a good wall scrubbing cleaning, which will happen before Xmas
  • If we exclude my "closet room" - essentially a third bedroom which the prior owner (my grammy, lol) converted to a giant walk in closet and I am now using as storage for all the crap I haven't unpacked yet and don't know what to do with - then a few hours. I have been sick a lot for the past couple months and haven't really kept up with the house like I should, but a quick vacuum and tidy up in the living areas and some scrubbing in the kitchen would get it ready.

Actually the other day I had a little sad moment about my house because I feel like it's always messy. I told Matt I want him to be proud of me and think, wow, what a great little wife she would be, and not, holy crap my girlfriend is a mess.

This is me and it is one of the most frustrating things. Sprout has "issues" and Oakley seems to shed everywhere so I often feel like my floors are a lost cause to pet ick. Still, I chug along behind them like a lunatic with my broom and mop.

I have this kind of sad moment all the time.  Luckily Josh is a mess as well so there's no judging.  But that just means that the house is really a mess and neither of us do anything about it.

I used to be really neat and clean - ask my college roommate.  Unfortunately, a dorm room/small apartment seems to be all that I can handle. Stick out tongue

Well, call me a slob, but I don't know that I've ever cleaned the walls in my place since we moved in almost 6 years ago.Ick! I mean, I'll wipe down the bathroom walls in spots every now and again since it gets so drippy with condensation, and we'll take care of cobwebs, but that's about it!

We're lucky to get the floors sweeped once a week, keep the sink free of tons of dishes, and not let the dirty (and clean!) laundry pile up so that we get into rooms. Forget dusting, extensive scrubbing, or other such labor and time intensive things! Huh?

I am SO bad about this. I fold it right out of the dryer. It goes in the basket and makes it up stairs to the bedrooms but that is as far as it gets a lot of the time. It drives me crazy.

  • I've only wiped down walls when they have splatter on them... are you supposed to?!?

My house is a pigsty right now and I don't really care. I could clean it in an hour or so, permitted people didn't go into our bedrooms.  It's cluttered though and it needs a good decluttering. We tried really hard pre-baby but then we got more clutter...

Embarrassed  I told you, I'm compulsive. Although, I should say I wipe, don't scrub. Although some of my molding could use a little more than a wipe. Dust collects on the walls. I can see it in the sunlight when you wipe the wall so I take a damp microfiber cloth and just wipe them maybe every 5-6 months? My DH is the same way, you should see us clean if we have a party lol. I blame my mom though, she ran a small luxury inn and I did white glove inspections. If you went in to my closet now you'd see that my hangers are 2 inches apart :P You'd also see the pile of clean clothes getting smushed into a basket though

This is the kind of stuff that it bothers me if it's not done, but I'm just too lazy and tired to actually do it. :(

You're not alone.  I also wipe down walls, about every 8-12 months.  People like to tease me about it and I can see why.  ;-)
