Kindle/Nook

Can anyone school me on these?  I *think* I might ask for one for Christmas.  One with WIFI would be cool, but not necessary.  I would like to get ebooks from the library too.  I'm dumb when it comes to the latest electronics.  Embarrassed

Re: Kindle/Nook

  • they're pretty much the same. I researched it last summer and the main difference was that only Nook let you borrow from the library and others - but I read that you can do that with Kindle now too, so really it's whatever feels right to you.
  • I am asking for a Kindle for Christmas too. I just want the basic model to read books.

  • My husband, who does a ton of research on these types of things (gadgets), likes the Kindle Fire.  He really likes the tablet functionality at a really great price.  One disadvantage to the Kindle Fire (or the nook color) is the lack of e-ink screen.  The screens on these two is like a computer screen, where the b&w options are not backlit and don't strain your eyes any more than reading words on a page in a book would.

I have a nook, the previous generation, before the simple touch came out.  I wanted a nook because of the ability to borrow from the library and I like some of the features that link up with BN stores (there are often coupons on my nook for cafe freebies or discounts, you can read any book on your nook while in store for up to an hour, etc.).

My understanding is that Amazon now has a "library" where you can borrow books for a Kindle, but I'm pretty sure you still can't borrow regular epub format books from the library and load them onto your kindle.  I think both devices now include a lending feature where you can loan between friends who have the device--so if a majority of your friends had one device over another, that could be a reason to choose one.

Kindle books seemed to be slightly cheaper than nook books last time I checked, maybe a dollar or so.

I think the website CNET does comparisons/videos on all of these devices (this is where L gets a lot of his info) if you want a more thorough comparison.

  • Oh, and one more thing, if you want to get ebooks from the library, you might pull up your library's website and take a look at their ebook library and how extensive it is.  The one at my library is currently a bit lacking, but I also only started downloading library books a few weeks before school started, at which point my leisure reading abruptly stopped.
  • yes, I have the basic version with e-ink. Battery life was very important to me since I travel a ton. I figure if I wanted to spend the $ on the Nook Color or tablet-esque I'd just get an ipad ;-)
  • I have the Nook Simple Touch that came out this summer.  No color, no apps, just reading ebooks.  Which is fine for me.  I'm able to download Overdrive books from the library and ebooks from NetGalley.  I can transfer any of my pdf or ePub books easily to it.  The battery lasts forever and I love it.

  • I have a Kindle and I LOOOOOOOOVE it. There are a ton of free books for it on Amazon.com and you can find cheap books, too. You can also borrow library books on it now--- Woooohooooooo! It's awesome! So easy to do. You could pretty much get a Kindle and never spend another dollar on books. There are that many free options. There are also some books that are lendable, although I haven't found many that come with that option.

Customer service with the Kindles has been top notch. I had a minor issue with my screen and decided to get it switched out before my warranty ran out. I had a new Kindle the next day. No joke. The person I spoke with was great. I love mine so much that I've recruited four other people to join on my Amazon account and we all share books.

I've never really looked into the Nook, but can't say enough good things about the Kindle.

  • My sister raves about her Kindle, but I've never actually even held one.  We have an iPad, but I hate to pay money for a digital book, I'd much rather buy a real copy.

I used to buy paper books, but I would read them, and then they would collect dust and take up space. LOL.  This made me think that maybe an eReader would be good for me.

How does this work?  I like the idea of book sharing.

It's definitely more eco-friendly and space saving, maybe one day I'll be able to give up real books lol.

I feel this way about cookbooks, but not fiction. I also opted for a digital version of an herb companion since I thought it would be easier to search (it is!) I guess it's a case by case basis.
