dressing for 2nd interview w/ CEO

I'm interviewing with a small start-up in the Bay Area, where the dress code is jeans and sweaters.  For the first interview, I wore a suit and felt kind of awkward.  But it wasn't a big deal, and I'm glad I wore the suit.

Now I'm going in for a 2nd interview, and it's with the CEO.  I'm not sure if I should wear a suit again (w/ a different shirt underneath) or if I should wear something slightly more casual.  I'm thinking dressy pants + a nice shirt + black cardigan.  What do you guys suggest?  I really want this job!

  • Suit. I fail to see what the dress code has to do with what to wear to a professional interview, esp with a CEO

  • A suit. Not to be rude, but I can't believe you'd consider dressing down for a second interview, especially one with the CEO.

  • Thanks!  I'll definitely wear a suit.

(I'm from the east coast, and have repeatedly been told that the west coast is more casual.)

In general, yes. But 1) that's as far as general dress code and 2) you're still talking about an interview. With a CEO

In general, I agree... but if the company is known to be casual and the candidate portrays an image that doesn't fit with their environment, it could cost her the job. I'm speaking from experience. I re-interviewed for a job a year after my first try (and interview) and was told that I didn't get the job the first time because I seemed too professional for the position.

Yes, that kind of thing does happen, but it's the exception, not the rule. Unless I was told specifically to keep it casual, I would always dress up. Especially with an interview with the CEO.

  • I'm biased since I worked at casual places that were like jwritegirl's experience. I think showing that you fit in with the work culture is very important and if the CEO is going to be there in jeans it would look better if you were in slacks and maybe a jacket.
  • I miss the east coast, where there's usually no question as to what is expected.  I was on the fence when I posted the OP, but I'm just gonna wear the suit.  May as well get more use out of it.

I have no idea what the CEO will wear.  I'd rather look too professional than look like I'm slacking.  I'm going to compromise by wearing a shell inside the suit instead of a dress shirt.  And I'll try to project warmth through my eyes without freaking them out.

  • Alternatively, if it's a more creative type company, you can wear a funkier suit, or more colorful top and interesting jewelry.

I wore a suit to plenty of interviews in CA and CO. It never cost me a job. And I worked at an east coast company where Fridays were casual. People talked for months about the marketing director who didn't bother to dress up for a Friday interview. So it can go both ways.

  • Can you wear a suit with a shirt underneath that you could take off if you were uncomfortably overdressed? Then you would be in nice pants and a dress shirt.

I think its important to dress very nicely, but at the same time, if being dressed in a suit makes you feel awkward and not perform well in the interview, it could possibly work against you, more than its helping.
