classy/fancy restaurant recs in mclean/falls church/vienna

I post more on the local bump board, but i have a question i'm hoping someone can answer here...DH and I are going out to dinner with my boss and his wife this weekend.  My boss is definitely on the snobby side when it comes to food and wine...i invited them to dinner, so the restaurant choice is in my court (trying to make nice with the boss:).

So many restaurants to choose from...so little time...any ideas for a classy, sophisticated dinner option that won't TOTALLY break the bank?  (willing to spend here, just want to keep it somewhat reasonable)--he's in Mclean, we're in Fairfax, so meeting in Vienna or somewhere around Tysons probably the best locations to consider....

TIA!!!

  • Have you looked at 2941 in Falls Church?

I think I read that early next year they're going to tweak their concept to be more casual, but for now it should still be fine dining.  Not sure if the prices would be considered a little steep.

  • I highly reccommend J Gilbert's in McClean. It's a steakhouse, but they have an excellent menu and good wine selection. It's not a super fancy restaurant, but I think it's definitely sophisticated. And really delicious.
  • Ditto J Gilberts, or Capital Grill.  Both are really good.
  • I'd also recommend Bazin's in Vienna:

ditto JGilberts. the food is great, it's not crazy expensive, and it's a nice place. There another great place in McLean, Evo Bistro, that is a lot smaller..more intimate, but the food and wine are outstanding. http://www.evobistro.com/

if budget wasn't an issue, I'd definitely recommend 2941 in Falls Church--it's amazing--but it's super pricey.

  • I was also going to recommend 2941, but definitely look at the prices first. It's more of a "special occasion" restaurant.

Definitely Bazins!  SO good.  Everything I've had there has been amazing.  Also, if you'll do Great Falls, there is a restaurant called Mediterranee and their fixed price menu is delicious!

  • I don't know if you are opposed to actually going to Tyson's mall, but Seasons 52 (right next to Gordon Biersch) is really excellent.  They have an extensive wine list, great decor/atmosphere and delicious, fresh food.  I swear I don't work for them, I just like their food a lot.
  • In Great Falls L'auberge Chez Francois is also very good.  I also like Argia's in Falls Church - they have wonderful homemade pastas and are very reasonable.

Completely reasonable and amazingly delicious is Four Sisters (Vietnamese) in Merrifield.  I personally think it is the best ethnic restaurant I've been to in the DC area.  Another delicious Vietnamese option is Present in Falls Church but the building they are in is definitely not impressive.  Sea Pearl next door to Four Sisters is pretty good as well (although much more money).  Probably not work appropriate, but if you go to Four Sisters sometime, go next door to Pastry Xpo for dessert and coffee.  They have the most amazing confections...

L'Auberge was going to be my recommendation. It is LOVELY with holiday decor, too -- and you MUST get the champagne aperitif and order a souffle! Please! do it! for me!

  • Love Evo Bistro if your wine drinkers.  J. Gilbert's would be my second choice but I have never tried Bazins (which is now on my list:-)
