DRY wool sweater in the dryer?

I just bought hubby a brand new/with tags irish merino wool sweater for christmas on Ebay. My problem is that it smells funny....a mixture of what it would smell like if you stuffed it in a drawer or cupboard or a box for a long time, and also smells and like some kind of bad perfume (probably the seller's).

Could I put this in the dryer with a dryer sheet? That wouldn't shrink it, but I'm worried about damaging the material (like pilling). Do you think the dryer sheet would get rid of the smell? I didn't really want to wash it before I give it to him. And I didn't want to Febreez the hell out of it either...not fond of clothes smelling like Febreez.

Ideas?

Re: DRY wool sweater in the dryer?

  • You can mist it with vodka.
  • Try hanging it outside to air out. I wouldnt put it in the dryer. Or you could hand wash it with Woolite, or take it to the dry cleaners, depending on what the care tag says.
  • I would definately NOT put it in the dryer.

First I'd try to hang it outside (or in the garage or wherever has some cool fresh air) for a few days and see if that helps.  Then, if not, I'd try to gently handwashing it without woolite and drying flat.

    Good luck!

  • I'd also say mist it with vodka for starters, turned inside out, let it dry outside, then return it to the right side out, re-mist, dry again... but wool can stink for ever if it's not professionally dry cleaned once a year or so.
