Exchanging gifts with family?
Did we talk about this yet? Just this read on D&R, thought I'd ask here.
How is it done in your family? Do you like it? Would you change it if you could?
Extended Family: dh's: Everyone draws names- adults and kids in one drawing.
mine: draw names: adults in one drawing, kids in another.
We withdrew our names from adult drawing and dh's family drawing.
Immediate Family: dh: we buy for everyone
mine: we used to buy for everyone but this year we drew names for anyone 18+. Everyone buys for the kids. (we used to do this for my extended family until I had kids, then they thought it was good idea to change it because it was too much $ for them- really? You have to buy one more gift- I've had to buy 11 extra gifts for years!)

Re: Exchanging gifts with family?
Extended family on my mom's side: The ladies draw names and have a $25 limit, the men do a $25 "man gift exchange" where they can steal each other's gifts, etc... We buy for all the kids (there are only a few small kids now)
Extended family on my dad's side: This only consists of my Grandma and Uncle and we exchange gifts with them with a $25 limit.
Immediate family: I have 2 siblings, 2 siblings-in-law, 4 nephews and 2 parents- We buy for everyone with a $25 limit. I usually spend around $50 each on my nephews though.
DH's family: We buy for his mom and usually get a restaurant giftcard for his mom/stepdad combined.
Extended Family Mom's side: Draw names with the cousins (my cousins, no kids on that side yet). Everyone buys for Grandpa. No gifts for Aunts and Uncles.
Extended Family Dad's side: Used to draw names, don't do that anymore... Usually get some sort of small trinket (ornament) from both sets of aunts and uncles. Everyone buys for Grandma.
DH's Extended Family (both sides): We don't buy gifts for anyone, no one buys gifts for us...
Immediate family all sides: Buy gifts for everyone! All together, we have two brothers, 1 SIL, Mom and Dad, MIL and FIL, and DH has a 1/2 brother with two kids and an ex wife... (it get's complicated).

We buy our parents individual gifts for all of them. We buy our 2 nephews gift cards (they are a senior in high school & a sophomore in college). I have no siblings & DH has a sister who is married & a sister who is single. This year we are just buying a gift for one person. Instead of buying small gifts for everyone, the idea was to buy a bigger gift for one person. I think we'll spend a little less doing it this way, but not much. We'll see how everyone thinks about it next year.
We buy gifts for both of our immediate families, we don't do anything with DH's extended family so no gifts for them.
My dad's side we buy for grandma and the one kid in the family, my cousin's kid who is 2. Other than that no gifts allowed, we just hang out together and eat good food and play games.
Mom's side we do gifts for everyone, aunts, uncles & cousins. They are always really small gifts, but I wish we could do away with this and just do the kids. Every year they say we're not going to buy gifts for everyone and then everyone does anyway. We do a white elephant too.
DH's family: all the siblings and their spouses bring a $25 gift, lately with a theme, and we do gift exchange where you can steal gifts. Everyone buys for the kids (there are 6 now!) and parents, although often the kids go in together on a bigger gift for the parents.
My family: Right now, all my siblings are students. We used to do a name draw, and everyone buys for just one person, but last year I bought gifts for everyone since I have a pretty good job now. But gifts are kept small, so it's not a huge burden. We usually go in together on gifts for the parents.
I have 2 sisters (both married with kids) and 1 brother (with a longtime gf but no kids), and three parents since my mom is remarried. We only exchange gifts with our parents and we buy one gift each for the kids.
H has 2 brothers (one married with baby on the way) and two parents. We exchange gifts with everyone and I hate it (cue Grinch theme song). His older brother is very well off and always spends a LOT on us which makes me feel bad since there is no way we can match it. And his parent's have everything they want/need and also go hog wild on us. Basically I hate it because I always end up feeling guilty about the lack of gifts from us to them. I keep pushing H to tell his brothers no more exchanging amongst the adults....hopefully next year!
We don't exchange gifts with extended family like aunts/uncles/cousins/etc. I think I would go insane if we did since we both have huge families.
For my family, I buy for my mom, sister, grandparents and neice. My dad's side doesn't exchange except for a while elephant at our big family party.
For DH's family we buy for his mom. We used to buy for his neice and nephew, but we aren't doing that anymore. They never even pay attention to who gave them what and get so much crap, that we don't figure it will be missed and we aren't sure it was appreciated anyway. Sometimes we do a secret santa and buy a gift each for that.
For my immediate family - The six of us kids and any significant others draw names. Then of course we each buy gifts for our parents. We dont exchange gifts with extended family on my side any more.
DH's family - Me and my SIL use to exchange gifts and DH and his brother would exchange gifts. This year both DH's brother and sister decided they didnt want to exchange gifts because they didnt have the extra money. We didnt really care, so we are find with that. We of course buy gifts then for his parents and grandparents, but that is it.
