anyone drive to Albany NY (or Cooperstown?)
b/c of Cubs news this week, DH and I are contemplating a trip to the baseball hall of fame next year (yes, i am trying to win wife of the year award). has anyone done this drive? we could fly but between driving to the airport and then needing a car from Albany to Cooperstown, it might just be better to have our own car.
has anyone been to either place? going to try the travel board too.
Re: anyone drive to Albany NY (or Cooperstown?)
if you fly, you'd probably be better to fly into syracuse. i think cooperstown is almost halfway between syracuse & albany and syracuse is probably the cheaper airport. i haven't driven there from here but i bet stargirl can give you a good estimate on the drive since she went last weekend. my guess is at least 7 hours each way . . .
I mostly lurk here but I'm from the Albany area (about 45 miles north but am familiar with Albany/Troy/etc). A drive from here to Albany is about 7 hours...maybe less if you time rush hours well and go the NJ way. To get to Cooperstown I would say is about the same since the roads are a bit different (a bit more mountainy through PA).
To fly up and drive from either is about the same drive time though I think the drive from Albany is slightly shorter. Rental cars are pretty inexpensive up there, too.
If it was us, I think we'd just drive up because the drive is pretty. But I have a husband who doesn't mind driving and can sleep in the car.
This.
I drive regularly to my parents house (about 2 hours west of Albany) and it takes me 5.5/6 hours. It shouldn't be too bad of a drive if you cut through PA through Harrisburg and Scranton, maybe 6.5 hours.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
We have a meeting in Cooperstown every year and it is a little over an hour from Albany. Syracuse is closer to a little over an hour and half to the airport.
I would drive, we go to Lake Champlain which is 2.5 hours north of Albany and it is a beautiful ride. Long, but you can stop at Stewarts for sundaes and that always makes the drive better.
I would also make a week of it and hit the finger lakes wineries. It's truly lovely up there.
We just made the drive this past weekend. It's about 6 hours, plus any stops you make. We went up 15 to Gettysburg, then over on 83, to 81 then on up, and I think it's 88 in NY. We made a stop in Scranton (DH's alma mater) for school apparel shopping and lunch at one of his favorite places. then on up to Cooperstown. We left around 9, Scranton around 1, got to our B&B just after 5. Not a bad drive, just gets boring through NY.
I have great recs for breweries, restaurants and the b&b if you are interested!

cool! did you go to see the hall of fame? it sounds like this might not totally suck for me afterall.
I did this years ago with a friend. We saw the HoF. It is a cute town. We did some stops along the way:
Moosewood Restaurant - http://www.moosewoodcooks.com/ - in Ithaca.
Seneca Falls - http://www.senecafalls.com/visitor-attractions.php - Gateway to the Finger Lakes, home to the Women's Hall of Fame
I went there for a conference in May 2010. It's about a 7 hour drive and it's not bad at all. Cooperstown is beautiful and the Hall of Fame is awesome. Brewery Ommegang is up there, too. Go for a tasting!
ETA: correct spelling for Ommegang. There is also a Cooperstown brewing company which makes fairly decent beer.
I'm not really a beer person, but Ommegang is freaking awesome! They do belgian-style beer. You should totally go there!
Also, we did a stop in Philly on the way back. One of my goals is to see a major league game in every ML stadium. We caught a game on the way back.
ETA: We also looked on a map (yes, remember the days of the ADC map!) and did side trips to presidental birthplaces and/or libraries. Another thing on my bucket list - see all presidental birthplaces and/or libraries. Yes, I am a goober!
Yep, that's why we went actually. A b&b up there does a 'Bed and Brew' package with the brewery. It's amazing. We got a VIP tour, tasting and paired beer dinner. We didn't make it to the hall of fame, we just did dinner there Friday night (Alex and Ika's, awesome food), then a beer night back at the b&b (Inn at Cooperstown, can't recommend it enough). Saturday we did some shopping along Main Street, out to lunch, then a cider mill and two other breweries (Butternuts which was low key and lots of fun, and Cooperstown Brewing which was okay, not great, but okay) then off to our VIP night at Brewery Ommengang. They were so, so fabulous. We love their beers to begin with, but they opened up special things for our group and really outdid themselves. It was superb. Let me know if you want to hear about anything else, we'll be at the GTG this weekend if mrstrug wants to hit up starboy with any questions. ;-)
