With doctors like this, who needs diseases? (vent)

Seriously! WTH??

I went to a rheumatologist for my muscle/joint issues back on the 15th. He took blood for blood tests and a bunch of Xrays, prescribed two meds that he thought would work better than my Alleve-- after acknowledging that they were safe to take while TTC and during at least the first 2/3 of pregnancy. And he told me to come back in 4-6 weeks.

They didn't work. At all. I could have been taking sugar pills, for all the good they did. Okay, no biggie. He was gone the week of Thanksgiving, so I talked to a nurse who talked to the other doctor in the practice, and they took me off one of the meds and said to double-up on the other one. Okay, I'll give that a go. One week later-- no go. The med wears off in 4-6 hours, when it works at all. Another phone call, then, to the doc.

My doctor's solution? Let's prescribe 2 more drugs for me-- and let's have one of them be "a narcotic-like opioid" (yeah, I'll go to work on that! NOT!) simply for pain and the 2nd is a drug THAT IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PREGNANCY OR WOMEN TTC. Seriously?!?!

Where are the results of the Xrays?!? Where are the results of the blood tests?? How is any of this better than my Alleve? You're so highly recommended by other doctors and nurses-- is this the best you can do? If you can't treat me, how about you just say "I don't think I have anything to contribute" and we part ways?

I don't think the voicemail I left for his staff today will actually convey exactly how much I want to kick this doctor in the shins. So. Frustrated.

  • That's so completely frustrating! I hope you can find a new DR that actually knows what they are doing!
  • In my experience, you have to constantly remind doctors if you are pregnant or TTC and ask again if medications are safe for pregnancy. Most doctors (other than OB/GYN) just don't have that on their minds all the time.

  • Ugh, I'm sorry. I hope you find something that works and some better responses from the MD.
  • Aw honey, I'm so sorry! I can only imagine how frustrated you are not only in trying to manage your pain, but also feeling like your concerns about the safety of the medication while TTC fell of deaf ears. Is there someone else in the practice you can go see? Hang in there & hope you find a great doctor that listens to you soon!

  • Ugh, I've been going through this kind of thing for the last couple of years with a problem I've been having.  It is super-frustrating when someone who's supposed to be helping you is totally clueless.  Especially because I'm sure you were excited to have some possible relief, so there's disappointment on top of the frustration.  If you need a shin-kicking buddy, I'm in!
  • Oh, Daniele, that is frustrating!  I wish so very much that this would stop being such an ordeal for you!  ((hugs)) How often are you asking about the x-ray or blood test results?  Knowing you, it's every time you call but don't give up!  Are there other rheumatologists you could try?  This guy sounds like he is simply NOT the doctor for you.  I KNOW there is someone out there who WILL figure out what's going on and get you the right treatment.
