Moving to Seattle next week! Tips / Advice?

Hi ladies, my H and I are moving to Seattle next week - any general tips / advice?  Both our families are from the area and we lived there as kids, but have been on the east coast for the last 10+ years. Will be renting for a bit, but eventually (soon-ish) would like to buy a house on Mercer Island.  Looking forward to reading future posts!

  • Hi! Welcome to the board! My H and I just moved here in May, so I understand the "need to know." What area(s) will you be looking for info for? H and I have made friends walking our dog and taking boxing classes. Good luck with your move!

  • Welcome back to the area!

If you're going to be on/near Mercer Island and don't mind trekking to Bellevue, for hair, I'd highly recommend Alyssa at Seven Salon in Belle Square.

Brow Wax rec - Cassandra at the Bathery in Kirkland. Again, a bit of a trek if you're on MI.

I grew up here, but made most of my current friends in college/as an adult. It's definitely not the easiest place to meet people, but once you've met a couple people, it's easy to branch out and make friends with their friends. Most of our friends are from my college, work, or church. We do chat with our neighbors and other gym-goer's, but wouldn't call any of them friends.

  • So I find it personally somewhat difficult to meet young people / friends unless your job happens to be filled with other people your same age (lucky for me and H, both our jobs are / were, but we're in SF), but I know of a few things in Seattle my girlfriends have used:

-Girls Power Hour (look them up online) - they have events every month or so and they're mainly focused on networking (great to meet people from companies you want to apply to or meet people who may need your services if you're a realtor, stylist, etc.), but I know some girls who have made friends through this.  And then if you make friends with one person, they can sometimes introduce you to other people.

-Intramural sports leagues - my sister and brother both played in a sloshball (kickball with a keg) league, and also played softball and did bowling leagues.  Look for the ones that tend to have younger people organizing them.

-Meet-ups - I think the website is www.meetup.com, but that can allow you to find groups who are interested in activities you're interested in (yoga, hiking, running, collecting stuff, etc.).  I have a girlfriend who coordinates a running group via that and they seem to skew toward younger (late 20s / early 30s) people.  Just use common sense when joining any internet groups.

-Volunteer - you can sometimes meet people if you volunteer locally with an organization/cause.

-Sign up for a class - in SF, the way to meet younger people is to do yoga, as the yoga studios are packed with girls in their 20s/30s (and gay men).  If you just attend these classes and start seeing the same people all the time, then you can strike up conversations and develop friendships that way.

-Alumni groups - if you attended college somewhere and you or your H have an alumni group, get involved.  And if you were part of a sorority / fraternity, get involved with your alumni chapter out here.

Hope these ideas help - good luck and welcome back!  I am uber-jealous as I don't think we're going to move back to Seattle until 2014 or so... but I can't complain too much because SF is pretty great.  :)

  • Thanks for the tips everyone! We're all moved in to our temporary apartment and loving Seattle. I appreciate the tips re: meetups/etc. - it does seem difficult to meet new girlfriends.
