Cleaning My Washer

I bought a new washer a month ago and used the tab thing to clean it before the first use. However, the little tablet thing came in a little box and didn't give me any directions other than to drop it in the drum and put my washer on the clean cycle. I am wondering how often I need to do this? Is it a monthly routine? Also, what should I use to clean my washer? I have no idea what kind of tab it was. I should have saved the box but I didn't.

Re: Cleaning My Washer

  • Have you checked your manual?
  • What bit of manual I have I did. Apparantly my manual got mutilated as they got the dryer out of the box and part of it is missing. I think that the cleaning instructions might be part of it. I asked about a replacement and Lowes was NOT helpful. :(

  • I'd guess that the tablet was one provided by the manufacturer to clean any residual oils that may have been left in/on the drum prior to the first use. Installers should run an empty load through to make sure everything is in working order, so the tablet could hypothetically be added then. At least that's what my installers said that they're contracted to do (they were from Lowe's).

Otherwise, check your manual. Odd are that you can just run an empty load, use hot water and a cup of distilled white vinegar, whenever you notice a musty smell. As long as you don't let wet laundry sit in the washer and you leave the door/lid open when not in use, you shouldn't have to do that often.

The commercial "washer cleaners" are a waste of money, IMO. Vinegar and water does the same thing for much less money (vinegar costs <$1.00 for a quart, commercial cleaners are $5+).

  • You might try going to the manufacturer website, you can possibly view the entire manual on the website or request a new one.  I've done that a few times over the years.

But yes, they give you the tab to clean your machine.  My manual indicates the washer should be cleaned once a month.  I'm to use either the tablets or bleach and the 'clean cycle' on the dial.

It also says to wipe the rubber door seal/gasket with bleach.  I don't do this, but I do wipe it with a damp cloth about once a week and I always leave the door ajar so air can circulate.  I don't have any mold/mildew issues.

  • I've never tried, but heard that dishwasher tablets work just fine.  Or, just use vinegar.
  • I use the tide washing machine cleaner. You can get it somewhere like Target over with the detergent.

  • The HE machines need to be cleaned once a month.  If they start to smell musty, you should clean them once a week for 3 weeks and then monthly.  Tide makes a washing machine cleaner (look with the detergent at Wal Mart) and there are other brands also.  Follow the directions on the box!
