Does anyone actually enjoy office holiday parties? (vent)

The ones held after hours at a location away from the office?  No offense to my co-workers but I just really dont want to have  to spend my free time with them.

And to top it off, I think we will spend part of the time discussing work. Ugh.

If we have to do something, I'd almost rather just do a lunch or something.

Bet you can guess where I'm headed this evening.

Re: Does anyone actually enjoy office holiday parties? (vent)

  • I sometimes like them.. I wouldn't want to do an after hours party with my current office just because I don't really know them and I don't seem to have much in common with them.

People in the guard- we get together all the time outside of work, so yes. I actually hate doing lunch stuff with them because it doesn't feel as festive.

  • I usually like them, especially when we used to get dressed up for them and do something kind of fancy. It helps when you work with people you are friends with outside of work and would go for drinks or dinner with them anyway. If it's a bunch of sticks in the mud, then not so much.

  • I guess if I liked everyone from the office it would be ok, but at most of the offices I've ever worked at there were some people I didn't really want to spend extra time with and make obligatory small talk with. And at my last office, we had assigned seating I rarely got to sit with anyone "cool"

I dont dislike any of my current coworkers, but there are only 3 of us and I just want to go home and relax after a long day - not head back out and either talk shop with coworkers or small talk with spouses and be generally cheery and pretend I don't have anxiety issues when I have a ton of other things to do.

  • I'm with you and have never liked them.  I prefer to hang out with my family and object to having an imposition on my time with them.

  • I'll let you know after Friday.  I haven't been to a holiday party in about 10 years but DH just recently got a new job and his party is Friday.

  • I liked mine when I was working. But then, my co-workers were lots of fun and I liked them.

DH's are okay, now that I've been going for six years and actually know a few people enough to remember their names. Plus, it's my one chance a year to get fancied up for a formal dinner. :)

  • I like them and try to consider them a free night out with a decent dinner and an excuse to dress up.  DH's office party is very over the top so I don't mind a fancy night out.

  • I'm with you, not my cup of tea.  I like my coworkers fine, but I feel like my evenings/out of work time is precious.  We have ours at a bar near work starting about 3 pm, so I enjoy it, but if it was after hours, chances are that I wouldn't be going.  I get to be more and more of a hermit the older I get!  Plus we live in the 'burbs, have the kids, etc., so it's kind of a hassle.

  • I do.  But that's because we have fun stuff like trivia contests, baking contests, a staff band who plays kick ass music and lots and lots of booze.  Smile

  • most places I've worked haven't really had anything due to budget, but the ones that I've been to have been a lot of fun.
  • I haven't attended the off-site party for the school in the time I have been there - partly because it is always on a weekend and I am unwilling to give up my personal time, and partly because it is up a freaking mountain, and you know Keri doesn't think that is fun or relaxing.

I have loved the return of the "during work hours, at the school, booze is served at like 2pm on a weekday" party the past couple of years.  Paid to party?  Yes please.

  • I like ours.  it's fancy, good food, free booze, dancing, and a raffle with really good prizes (trips, amex gc, wine).

  • They're ok. I like the yummy food and drink we get for free. My CWs I'm buddies with outside the office would prefer to not have to deal with CWs that annoy the crap out of us though.
  • I've enjoyed them in past years, but this year on a Saturday night with trying to obtain childcare when I don't have any family nearby - nope. I skipped it.
