I have been at the same job for 15 years...have hated it for a long time. lots of political bs and the future isn't looking too bright. I have been looking for a way out for a while. My job has nothing to do with my degree but in order to work in the mental health field I would be taking a HUGE paycut.
I have been offered a position, sounds like something I would be interested in, BUT the pay is 10K less. I would be saving by not having to pay union dues and the insurance in cheaper. It is a trainee position so there is room to move up within the next few years....
I need some advice/guidance here...am I crazy to consider a job with less $$$? thanks for any input
Re: advice needed
this! if you can do it doit!
i think it would be difficult to make a career path change and not expect to take a certain level of reduction in pay. i know that as dh and i have looked around at different options when we get the bug- most of the drastic changes would come with a short-term reduction in pay for longer term gains.
you need to look at what your family needs now (as far as the money goes) and balance that against future happiness, earnings, work-life balance, and stability in the market. that should help you make the best longer term decision.
Ditto everyone else.
And to it I would add, there is a price one pays for quality of life, work/life balance, not hating one's job, etc. Just decide if $10K is the price for you.
thanks so much everyone...its time for me to go after 15 years! I appreciate all of your encouragement. there is def room to move around once i am in. and my years transfer over toward my seniority and pension
for those of you who know the crap hole i work in...chances are, the office will be privatized in a few years. so its time to go.
as for teh mental health field...i was a psych major, i may apply at a few hospitals to do a few over night shifts per month to see if it would be something i am interested in. does anyone work in that field?
thanks again
